Best Albums of 2014... So Far!
Posted by: Tony2011 on 10 January 2014
Although a little early in the year this one seems to have a good following on the net and on this very forum.
It's on order.
This double album is on my best released albums of 2014 list.
Just noticed its up for a few Grammy's,
Jah.
This is another of my best 2014 albums.
Great to see a brilliant band keeping the old Canterbury Scene alive.
Another few brilliant 2014 vinyl album releases.
Did 2014 suck totally for new music releases?
Seems a valid question given that so much of the stuff posted here is re-issued music from a different year or even different millennium. I listen mostly to old stuff as my expectations for anything made today aren't very high. However, three artists that released particularly good albums of new music this year are John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, and Beck.
How could I forget this one - perhaps the best of them all...
My wife and I couldn't get through it. "Turn it off" is her review, and that's a quote.
We had an interesting discussion about performance art vs. music, etc etc. I do think that there's an element of 'recording her performance art' to this album, which to me doesn't translate into something I'm enjoying listening to in my living room. (We saw her with David Byrne and it was a phenomenal show. But something if we owned a live recording of we'd be unlikely to listen to at home; it was, again, performance art.)
But I'm glad I got to see (hear) what it's about, thanks to your post!

I'd add Robert Plant to this list; at least *I* really like his 2014 album!
Roseanne Cash - The River and the Thread

Might give it another try but I didn't get it either. Really annoying.
Roseanne Cash - The River and the Thread
Some really good tunes on that one.
Another favourite 2014 release of mine.
Some nice guitar work on this by David Gilmour.
Thanks for reminding me about this. I have loved Ben's sing since I first heard EBTG's sublime The Night I Heard Caruso Sing
Another few brilliant 2014 vinyl album releases.
Have you tried this?

Did 2014 suck totally for new music releases?
It wasn't a vintage year, like 2013, but there were some really good new albums:
Caribou/Our Love
Dylan Howe/Subterranean
Scott Walker & Sunn 0)))/Soused
Jack White/Lazaretto
Robert Plant/Lullaby & The Ceaseless Roar
Swans/To Be Kind
Aerial Pink/Pom Pom
Royal Blood/Royal Blood
Dan Michaelson & The Coastguards/Distance
Aphex Twin/Syro
Boris Blank/Electrified
I think 2014 will be remembered as the year of the box set.
Bananahead,
Had a listen to
Its OK but not really my reggae cup of tea.
Did 2014 suck totally for new music releases?
Not for me. I usually end up with a year-end list of 5-6 really good albums that I expect to still be playing 10 years from now. No different this year; Leonard Cohen, War On Drugs, Tweedy, Alt-J (maybe), Dan Michaelson,, Damon Albarn and Real Estate: Atlas which by a whisker is best of the year for me. All 'keepers' which is a good hit rate I reckon.
Bruce
Almost forgot Bonnie Prince Billy: Singer's Grave A Sea Of Tongues. As good as anything he has done recently. I think maybe he is an acquired taste, not sure anyone else on here has heard this but if you want a more upbeat BPB album this is a great place to start.
Finks 2014 album Hard Believer is a most excellent album.
Lovely double 180g vinyl.
Original release of this wonderful album was 2007.
It was re-pressed due to public demand and released as a lovely double 180g vinyl box set a couple of years ago and again this year.
The glossy prints would look good on the walls of anyones listening room.
There ninjatune site still have stock £20 inc P&P.
Ben Howard - I Forget Where We Were
A bit of a diverse mix from me, but these are my picks
Underworld 2014 anniversary release.
Nobody mentioned the latest Cradle of Fifth album so I won't either - you'll have look it up yourself as the forum is unhappy with the Wiki URL owing to its charming title.
Wat,
Have just ordered a vinyl copy.
Didn't know they had a new album out.
Thanks for the heads up.
I can now sit back with my feet up on boxing day eating one of Delia's pies watching the buggies getting thrashed while listening to the new COF album.
Thats Wat i call heaven.
Excellent - I'll send you a copy of the lyrics - Danni Filth & Sara Jezebel Deva were going through a decidedly Eurovision period when they first created the demos.
Danni has his drink and class a drugs driving case coming up soon in the usa.
Rock and roll.
Sorry typo above.
It should of been Budgies.
Not buggies.
Even though a few of the divers in that team would be better off in one.
This is on my favourite 2014 list.
The CD came with the vinyl.
Another favourite on my 2014 album release list.
