asset upnp for qnap

Posted by: balma01 on 12 January 2014

Since 1/1/2014 there's a beta version of asset upnp for qnap nas. See http://forum.dbpoweramp.com/sh...-Asset-UPnP-for-QNAP

Is anyone trying it?

Posted on: 12 January 2014 by Simon-in-Suffolk

No, I see there have been challenges due the differences between the various QNAP operating systems and libraries, but I believe Asset has or is about to have a new beta to cater for these QNAP differences.

In terms of setup it appears identical to the Raspberry Pi version and that works superbly well with Naim. Let us know how you get on.

really intrested in your findings Balma

If I'm correct it only works on Intel based QNAPs . Have been checking out the Intel based boxes, had forgotten how expensive these little boxes are. The good thing is that if I buy one I can use my old QNAP to do all the backups with proper synchronisation - perhaps even remote!

Anyway, I'll see how the beta goes but would be interested to know if anyone is trying it and how things go. ATB.

The new beta supports all 3 models of QNAP (very old arm-x09), current ARM x19 and Intel based (ATOM or i3). We have all these models of QNAP now so the initial library dependency issues are a thing of the past, all 3 models are verified as working. Installation on QNAPs is very simple, 3 clicks and it is installed and already configured for serving and indexing.

Great news, thank you……will take another look

Simon  I think to test asset upnp on a  raspberry with an USB 2.0 HDD connected to it. Do you thin that a basic system like it will give good results? I do not think to it just as an upnp server (you said that it works supebly) but i think to it as a little central storage...

Hi Balma01, yes the Pi can be a great little UPnP server - and works well using network attached storage (NAS) mounts using CIFS or equivalent over your network.

But yes you can attach a USB HDD and mount it within the Pi. I think its slightly more involved but totally possible - and I have no reason to think it would not also provide great results.

Thanks Simon. I'll post the results of my test

Just downloaded this and installed quickly and easy, partly because yesterday I spent at least 4 hours getting minim server onto the QNAP 212.

Have to say this looks and feels better to my limited experience. Having said that (waiting for gasps) I quite like Twonky...I shall go hide now

PG...They say don't fix what isn't broken. I have the Qnap 112 with the latest version of Twonky. I have always hated It though, but recently some re tagging of albums, has made Twonky behave it self. Is it worth Installing the beta Asset, or let it be?

I have a QNAP 109II and have Twonky 6.039 as a QPKG serving my NDX.

Twonky is stable in this configuration but I have heard good things about Asset so I have set the beta Asset up in parallel to see how I get on with it.

There is no need to disable the Twonky installation - your Network player will happily see both and you can choose which one you want to use via the NDX or nStream.  There is no obvious impact on my NAS performance (CPU load has gone from 6% to 11%).

Hi Lebowski...If installing Asset on the Qnap won't interfere my present setup, then I'll give it a go. So when you go into Apps on the Qnap, both Twonky and Asset are shown, correct? I am using n-Stream with my ND5 XS.

Thanks

Hi Meerkat

I don't know if your Twonky version is the one built in to the QNAP firmware or you disabled that and installed the latest one as a QPKG.  I did the latter and the Asset and Twonky both show up as installed and enabled on my QPKG Apps page.  The point is you can run more than one UPnP server on the NAS at a time and your client chooses which one it wants to be served by.

I have the built in one, version 4.3. (Disabled) Then the app version of 7.2.51 on the QPKG Apps page. Thanks

Gonna try running both side by side. I found copying the download onto the public folder on the qnap from my Mac and then installing manually worked a treat.

Interesting, I'll have to give it a try.

Installing Asset on Qnap was a piece of cake, Chinese cake! All my albums & artists are all in Chinese! Most of the correct artwork is also missing, what a complete mess!

Will you take me back Twonky? I promise not to call you 'Wonky Twonky' ever again.

The difference will be, Twonky have been on the QNAP 6 years or so, you can judge how much progress they have made in that time, we have a beta build a few days old, if we can reproduce this issue it would be fixed by the end of the week...if you want to head over to our support site, where we can request one of your files we should be able to fix it pronto.

I installed the Asset qpkg for QNAP yesterday, and it is working just fine this evening.  One or two config options need sorting, and the "New Albums" playlist is not showing my newest rips, but that's about all I see wrong as of right now.

Asset on QNAP shows the same album/track count as Asset on my dedicated PC server, and the transcoding of FLAC to WAV works just fine. Overall, for a beta, I'm impressed. Thank you Mr. Spoon!

PS - @Meerkat - when did you download?  There was a new beta version made available this weekend, so you might want to delete the version you have, re-download and install. Mine shows up on the QNAP as "Test 6".

Hi Captain...Just about 45 minutes ago, the beta version. No idea why it's in Chinese? Do they have Meerkats in China?

Very strange.  The good news is that you have Mr. Spoon's attention, and if you do as he asks, odds are very good that he'll fix the problem quickly.

So far I have only got one track with Chinese text out of 6000 (it was an iTunes download) .  More than 90% of the album artwork is fine but the rest is cut off horizontally and not showing the bottom 3/4. Same on Bubble UPnP on my Samsung S4, so it is not an nStream issue. I have the test 6 version installed.

Audio is just fine and it seems more responsive than Twonky. Will keep playing with it. As Spoon says it is still in beta so you should expect some issues. I am grateful that he has decided to support the obsolete 09 series of server and as the software is only taking 5% of cpu resource there is no need to upgrade to a faster processor.

I should also add that as an experienced NAS user  it took me over a year to finally get Twonky stable and learning the tweaks and limitations by trial and error and also needing to re tag my library to allow WAV metadata and album art to work to so I understand the temptation to leave it well alone. Ultimately I think that Asset will prove better and the quicker we feed back issues the better.

For Meerkat I would suggest that you disable write caching in your QNAP as this has caused me all sorts of problems with metadata tags in the past and I have not noticed any performance penalty.

Lebowski...At least 60% of the library is in Chinese. Which includes my Queen CDs. The album names, tracks, etc, all in Chinese.

I won't start the WAV metadata debate yet again, but most go my library is now converted to FLAC and AIFF. I'm yet to decide which format I prefer.

Where is 'write cashing' in the Qnap set up?
