West German Red Swirl V's Blue Swirl V's Target
Posted by: GraemeH on 11 February 2011
Having just aquired a 'red swirl' Vertigo set of Dire Straits (yes, I know) studio albums and noted how they sound far superior to the later 'remasters' I wonder if they differ again from the 'blue swirl' or 'target' versions? Steve Hoffman's site gets a bit too technical for me on this!
Thanks
Graeme

Hello Graeme,
Ah, the old Dire Straits album, one of my all time favourites. I bought it on vinyl when first released in the good old days.
As for the cd versions, I sold the 1996 remaster (poor) and the Japanese SHM-CD (not quite so poor). I still have a French 'red swirl', the one that goes all the way to the middle (some don't) and a Japanese 'target'. I've never owned a 'blue spiral' of that particular album.
IMO and without doubt the Japanese 'target' really is the best. I found it to be much more dynamic than any of the others. I think it's also available on West German 'target' which are very good. I don't believe this was issued on Japan 'black triangle' which is a shame because they take some beating.
George.

I have 1 Dire Straits album on a WG Vertigo swirl Love Over Gold I think, but I only have it vinyl so no meaning full comparisons.
I do have few Rush albums on WG Mercury with 'Atomic' decoration where the swirls are, I have a couple of then on original CD and the WG Atomics are a shade clearer and crisper so I'll try for some more.
I think Mercury and Vertigo are the same company BTW.

Thanks folks. I might try a 'target' of the debut for comparison.
Best

I never compared the Swirls to the Targets directly but both sound great to me.

If my memory serves me right the Japanese target of the first album contains the full version of Sultans.
