nstream server not responding

Posted by: John Byrne on 15 January 2014

Dear all,

I am observing the much commented on problem with nstream where it loses the server.

Naim unitilite DCHP (long lease) wired to BT home hub 5
QNAP TS420+twonky DCHP (long lease) wired to BT home hub 5
nstream 3.6.7479 streamer:3.20.000, BC SW: 3D12791.39 on iPadmini model MF432B/A wireless to BTHH5

It seems to work well in uPnP compatibility mode but not when this is switched off.

My three questions are:

1 - am I using the most up-to-date nstream app?

2 - has anyone definitively got to the bottom of the problem as opposed to guessing and assuming?

3 - has anyone ever got a response from support@naimaudio.com

BT Home Hub has a bad reputation here I believe.

John,

You seem to have the latest version of nstream but your firmware for the Unitilite is not the latest. You could try updating to firmware version 3.22.00.

I got some response from naim help and done some tests.

It's not the QNAP NAS hardware server because the same loss happens when I set up a server on my laptop.

It's not the DLNA server itself because I've tried different servers with the same behaviour.

Sadly it does seem to be linked with my router (BT HH5) and is independent of whether the server is wired or wireless.

I've stopped the home hub "advanced uPnP security" "service" on the HH5 (no idea what it does and I'm not sure anyone else does either) and it made no difference.

I've stopped the HH5 "uPnP service" (no idea what that does either|) and it made no difference.

nstream works well in compatibility mode but not when this is turned off.

Looks like I need to buy a router.

I have the same issue, very new fiber optics connection/router device in new house with good cabling.    QNAP or Naim twonky incompatible case? I have the very latest HS-210, lates twonky, maybe this on twonky due without compatibility it shows qnap upnp stuff well but also twonky in addition when compatibility used? I just use NDS, no laptop.

I may have been hastey in pointing to the BT HH5.

I have set up:

Twonky on QNAP

Logitech on QNAP

Asset on laptop

On ipad mini if I "un-focus" nstream (what's the term to describe pressing the ipad button to select a different app?) and then start nstream again it searches for servers.

With compatibility on:

All servers available immediately

With compatibility off:

Logitech always comes up immediately

Asset appears after 10 to 40s

Twonky: usually from 70s to 2.5mins but sometimes longer and sometimes never (gave up after 5mins)

nstream links wirelessly via BT HH5 to all servers. Logitech and twonky are wired (via HH5) to Unitilite and Asset on laptop is wireless though I don't think this is relevant as it's the nstream app which is losing the connection.

The worst offender is Twonky. I'll have a look and see if there's an update.
