Hello Everyone and a very happy new year to you all...
I must firstly apologise for starting a new thread on what basically as already being answered back in Oct 2013?Afraid I have being very seriously ill...and all thoughts of HiFi Heaven sort of got forgotton, which is understandable.
I think I am still very interested in the NAIM
UnitiQute 2 All-in-one Player
As some of you may recall,my music is currently lodged on a Seaggate external drive, non of my music is less than 24/96 Quality, and ranges from Floyd to Led Zepp.
Back in 2013 I was looking at possibly partnering the Unitiqute 2 with the well reviewed KEF LS 50s,but for a while now I was wondering if these could be improved upon especially in the bass dept(possibly floor standers)?? but without going to mad on the orice hike? also thinking of good solid performance cables e.t.c.
I do not have my own ethernet router,as I live in a house witha LAN network which I share but do not control.so a router would be a good start all advice welcome please.
Must just recap my room is only 2 mtrs x 3.3 mtrs in size laminate floor on concrete, very small windows, with 2 sides built into solid rock.
I wanted back in October 13 to go on to ask about NAS storage e.t.c. but never got the chance, but I see it is just a form of storage? am I correct?
what is the ideal place for me to sotre my music files I am hoping to buy a new laptop at the smae time.is this a good place or should I look elsewhere can not recall the advice on this?
I will be looking for headphones and headamp, and just possibly a 55" plasma screen to intigrate it all for music vids and of course some moviews, but this latter add on will be later but any first thoughts appreciated.
all the very best Steve

Hello Wat
Many thanks indeed for your reply,I think I should have added to my opener that I am to technology what saddam hussain was to family unity
A bit dim!
Trying very hard to get my head around NAS and the associated tech language but struggling a bit, must admit, maybe I should ask what would the best NAS be and how easy is it to pair with the unitiqute e.t.c.
Must try and keep it as simple as possible from an understanding point of view,if I can put together a good solid set of synargic items that work really well together then I will be very pleased.
best wishes Steve

I use the Synology DS213+ NAS and put two 4 terabyte hard drives in it which will store more music on it than I could listen to in a life time!
The NAS is connected to my router and I connect my Unitiqute 2 to the router and the Unitiqute sees the router, my NAS and my PC within seconds. No hassle with set up.
The Synology NAS has a user interface on the PC in a browser window. Easy to use. I installed Media Server from the Synology package centre within, 1 and a half million users can't all be wrong!, and I browse my music with the free N-Stream app for iPad/iPhones.
The music on the NAS can be browsed by artist, album, folder and most handily, recently added. So when I add a bunch of newly ripped CD's, I can just listen to them and there's no need to rescan the music folder.
Media server can also stream movies and pictures to a connected smart TV.
The cost for the NAS and two 4 TB hard drives was around £500 and I've been impressed with it's simplicity and the fact it just works.
I recently installed another music server on it called Minimserver and have been playing around with that. The Unitiqute sees both servers and you can choose whichever you want to use. Easy as.

I'm running asset on my pc into my uq2 and it works very well indeed. I'm using Guru Juniors which are great in a 'living' room as they are happy againt a wall. The base is superb for their size. I'm also using a nap100 but the guru's sound great straight from the uq

Hallo
dayjay/Cbr600/ &Jota
Really am very impressed by your replies and personal input & feedback..
I hope you guys have a little patience I have a neurological problem and easily get confused..but thankfully with medication I can usually get there in the end,,just takes a lot of sinking in and for my brain to compute information.
If I am with it,the Synology would be a top choice for the NAS? and to this NAS I transfer all
my music which is about 500 gb at the moment.and I do not envisage being able to buy many more top quality audio music unless HD tracks gets there act together and issues much more back catalogue stuff..it all seems so slow with them.I am looking for skynrd,Neil Young, and a few other artists 24/96? so if anyone acan help please let me know.
I finished with CDs some time ago and really do not wish to go down that road again if I can help it.
I use the Synology DS213+ NAS and put two 4 terabyte hard drives in it
Please can you explain this in a little more detail for me ?
many thanks Steve

Hello again Wat
Good of you to help further very much appreciated.I have to get used to these NAS gear
I see the Vortexbox takes CDs this means it will make the cds in to flac files e.t.c. Correct?
will it do this with some of the higher bit rate cds? e.t.c. sorry I know I am struggling to recall the names of the Hi fidelity Cds e.t.c. is the Vortexbox better than the Synology previously mensioned?
Please keep the good advice coming it really will help me.
Cheers Steve

Hi again WAT
we must have passed each other in our replies..
I just want the best set up but without going to mad?
Uniqute 2 as centrepiece and the best associated components from NAS to cables through to Speakers e.t.c.I am in no great rush will have a few thousand maybe but does not mean I wish to spend all of it on Audio set up.but I do not have to penny pinch either,,which is probably the first time in my life I have being able to say that
cheers Steve

Another option is Naim's UnitiServe. It's five times the price of a Vortexbox, but lovely to use and of course matches the Qute perfectly.
You need to think about whether you want to use a computer to rip your CDs. If you are happy with that, you can rip the CDs on the computer and store the files on a NAS. On the other hand, if you have a vortexbox (like the one pictured) you can put the cd in and the box will rip the music and store it, with no need to use the computer.
In either scenario, you need to have a separate backup. In my setup, I have all the music on a UnitiServe, which is set to backup automatically to a Synology NAS.
Once you get your head round it, it's quite simple really.

hello Hungryhalibut
Really good to hear from you.afraid I could not afford the Naim's UnitiServe
as i said earlier,I do not have any cds the only reason I mensioned them in connection with the
Vortexbox, was I saw it took cds and I was sortof wondering about if I were to buy some of the high quality sacd`s e.t.c and burn to files or what ever the term is.
because there are many ggreat albums not vaialble from the likes of HD tracks e.t.c and so was thinking I could buy the top quality cds,if you follow me.
please keep the advciew coming
regards Steve

Hi
Thanks for the quick reply.I follow what your saying but I didi not wish to start a cd collection agin accept where HD Tracks are not available then I would buy the SACD and similar cds and rip to what ever,so I am close to you on this, luckily I already have about 60% of all the music i want at 24/96 probaly higher.so as long as i can rip at the higher bit rates without loss of quality that would be really superb
cheers Steve

Unfortunately there are no audio rippers available (that I know of) that will rip SACD. Not even possible on any mac, PC or Linux systems. There is only one way... Some old PlayStation 3 models can be hacked to rip SACDs and get the DSD ISO files. But then you need a DSD DAC to play the files or alternatively you can transcode to PCM with software. But you do lose some sound quality in the process. A friend of a friends happens to have one of the old PS3 models ;-)

afraid all that play station stuff is well beyond me
best wishes Steve
