Best DVD Player ??

Posted by: Don Atkinson on 17 January 2014

CD555/555PS costs c. £20k.With the arrival of NAS1/ NAS2 at c. £150k and Speakers at £30k that makes £200k to play CDs. Add matching amps and speakers for 7.1 surround sound plus a top-of-the-range Projector and screen would knock that investment up to the half million mark or beyond.

Sticking an Opp 105 on the front at £1k seems incongruent.

Any suggestions ?

Cheers

You forgot the video processor Don. Not really incongruous if all you're going to be using it for is to provide the video signal. There are quite a few "High-End" BluRay players but generally they're tuned-up for the sound output. Famously, Lexicon (an expensive brand) put a standard Oppo BD83 player in a different casing & charged a fortune for it!

I had (niaveily) assumed there were some high end DVD players/Processors out there that could wipe the floor with an Oppo, both in Picture quality and sound quality - albit at a price.

The Oppo doesn't compare with a 555 in sound quality, for example, but something else might ?

people paying £500k for the rest of their system including £50k worth of cables etc, aren't going to flitch at a £25k DVD player and a £25k processor.

I just wondered if anybody on this forum was aware of any REALLY good such players.

Obviously not.  (and possibly no such thing exists)

IF you are only using the front two channels, you can strip a two-channel PCM stream (stereo or downmixed) from the HDMI stream (I'm using a KanexPro HAECOAX box) and feed this into your two-channel DAC.  In this situation, the Oppo BDP-103* (which lacks the extra output-stage circuitry of the BDP-105) is a very safe bet to be the best player, for around $500 US.  [* - Model numbers listed are as marketed in the United States]

The Primare BD32 (based on an Oppo BDP-93) is decent sounding and possesses a good picture but is based on a previous generation of player, at around north of $5K US.

McIntosh MVP891 should do the trick if you want a player to compare in sound and cost, and as for looks.... Wow. But as far as picture quality goes the Oppo always steals the show.

You could always buy the Nu-Force steroided up version

MmmmmmmcIntosh :-)

Claw/Don, I was just about to suggest the McIntosh too.  It looks a very tasty piece of kit but I've not had the pleasure of trying it.  The 105 is an awesome box for the money (I have one) but it must have limits when one enters the high end of AV.....

Regarding the picture quality, all Blu Ray players must meet the Blu ray standard. So no concerns there. Output the audio to a quality AV amp and you're sorted.
