Copy iTunes files from IMac to VortexBox

Posted by: Narooma on 18 January 2014

After receiving excellent advice on ths forum, I purchased a VortexBox to rip my CDs to FLAC and stream to my Unitilite. I am extremely happy with the result, thanks for pointing me in that cost effective direction. I still have a handful of AAC files on my iMac, downloaded from iTunes. Can I copy these onto the VortexBox? I have limited IT skills, but I am happy interacting with the VB via the web interface on the iMac.

The iTunes Music store once changed their AAC files:

- The older ones where 128 kbps files with DRM and won't play outside Apples devices. The record companies (as right owners) wanted DRM.

- Later they switched to the newer iTunes Plus format with better 256 kbps and without DRM. The record companies where able to learn (!).

iTunes + files should play on every device that supports AAC format.

If yours are older, you should be able to upgrade them in the iTunes store for a reduced price song by song or with iTunes match subscription all at once.

As long as your files work (re above post) then just open Samba share on your Mac (Under 'Go' 'Connect to server...' and log in as 'guest') and drag the files to 'files/music/' and make a new folder called AAC and put them there. Pretty simple and should work. Btw, if you ever need to convert your Flacs on the VB to something else. I recommend Pro Audio Converter for Mac. Just take the files off the VB and then onto your Mac. Depending how many you have the conversion will take hours vs days on the VB itself (yes days if you have lots of gbs).

Which one did you go for?

With iTunes Match, can you get the files onto a computer and not just an iDevice?  I thought not.  I did not think that I could 'download' files FROM iTunes Match to my Macbook.

Yes you can! I used iTunes match to upgrade my older CD rips that where below 256 kbps AAC to iTunes Plus "quality" directly on my iMac. Afterwards you can sync them to your iDevices. Here's how to:

Standard warning: always make a full backup of your music library before trying big changes like that.
