Streaming Video to my Samsung Plasma

Posted by: Bart on 18 January 2014

I am just now realizing that when I see the DLNA player icons on my TV, it means that I can probably stream video to it from my nas.

Currently I play downloaded content or dvd rips from my Macbook Pro via Airplay to my Apple TV that is connected to the plasma via hdmi.  If I put that content on the nas instead,

1.  Should I expect better or worse quality?

2.  What format is most likely to work?

3.  I think I'm limited to a wi fi connection between the tv and network; no ethernet connection on the tv.  Am I missing something about how I'd connect it all up?

TIA,

Bart

Which model tv?

The format deends on which format your tv supports.
Best format right now would be mkv. Probably.
mkv hx264 seems to have the best quality/filesize ratio. But I am guessing that whatever format you currently use, you can keep using it.
Quality should be similar. Maybe better maybe worse. Depends on the built in decoder.
I am using a satellite receiver for stuff I have digitally and I find the picture quality equal or better to my notebook via HDMI.
And far less hassle, less noise etc.

Try it. And for your other questions we would need more details.

Bart, have a Samsung TV (UE40C6530U) and stream video from my QNAP NAS wirelessly without any issues.

I needed the wireless dongle to make it work, and I'm bypassing my BT router using Airport Express for the wi-fi function which seems to make everystables quite stable.

Quality seems to be OK but I don't really have anything to compare it to.
