What's are your favourite live jazz recordings?

Posted by: CFMF on 18 January 2014

What live jazz recordings really do it for you?

I like Wes Montgomery "Full House" and Miles Davis "Live at the Blackhawk", along with the Cannonball Adderley Quintet live in both Chicago and San Francisco.

These recordings really capture the essence of live performance IMO.

Cheers,

BBM

For me, Jarrett's fantastic solo on the title track defines the phrase genius at work. Awesome keyboard skills, blistering pace and not a note out of place.

After 20 odd years it's still my go-to record for sheer excitement and a great example of the European Quartet at their very best.

Can't understand why this album doesn't feature more often in lists of great recordings

Agreed on this. But also its recently released counterpart, Sleeper ... no less than equal!

IMHO Jarrett has made much better live records than Sleeper (e.g. Still Live with the American trio), and the SQ of this record  is bad by ECM standards. I guess that this bad SQ is the reason this record was not released earlier. I bought it with Qobuz and I regret it since I cannot sell it.

Three must have classics (IMHO of course)

I just got a copy Chris Potter's Underground Follow the Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard

Highly recommended if you like contemporary jazz.

The liveliness manifests itself mostly by the gentle 'clings' of glasses and silverware of the diners of the club. The performance of the two musicians is just outstanding.

Great suggestions here on this thread.

I just bought this one on CD, and it truly qualifies in my opinion;

Gerry Mulligan with Bob Brookmeyer Live in Paris.

This is a mono recording but the sound Quality is so good that it puts many of my 5.1 and Hi-res stereo recordings to shame.

And the music is absolutely marvelous. Bob Brookmeyer out plays Chet Baker in my opinion, his interplay with Gerry mulligan is sublime.

Red Mitchel and Frank Izola are one of the best rhythm sections in history.Period!

What an excellent list, I've ordered a nice selection from these. I probably would have never discovered these by myself. Thanks guys - very good use of the forum.

I can't believe I forgot Agartha and Pangaea by Miles Davis; if you like his 70s electric albums e.g. Jack Johnson, Bitches Brew, then I expect you'll like these too.

And for those of an adventurous nature, this is magnificent but uncompromising...

Live at the Village Vanguard: Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian.

Sound of Love

Paul Motian with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, also recorded at the Village Vanguard.

PS, another endorsement also for Lost in a Dream, posted earlier in this thread by Drew Turner.

More Paul Motian...

Known as both 'You took the words right out of my heart' and 'At the Village Vanguard', another excellent outing with Lovano and Frisell.

Tactics by John Abercrombie

Supported by Dan Wall on Hammond organ and Adam Nussbaum on drums.

The studio albums by the same trio are arguably better, though, i.e. While We're Young and Speak of the Devil.

My favourite is this out there pair, by Miles Davis, recorded in '74:

That said, any live Miles from '68 to '74 is darn near impossible to beat.

Less well know but quite recent, The Listener by Jeff Williams

Definite echoes of classic Ornette Coleman on this, but it still sounds up to date.

Essential listening!

First on the new NDX/555PS and, well, I could listen all day long.....but as night is drawing near.....

Aaarrrgh....but you can guess.

Too excited by my new toy.....I thought I was on 'what are you listening to.....' thread above so doh! - I realise these are not live.

Jim Hall Live is one of my favourite (and sonically dynamic) Jazz recordings.

No, this is a rather rare one for CD, recorded in 1964 in Sausalito but only released in 1971

This one is new to me, but definitely promising... and different from anything else I own.
