Superb film. The ONLY film directed by Charles Laughton, it was so savagely reviewed that he never directed another, tragic.

+1.

A very special and unusual film. The scene with the children floating down the river in a boat at night is simply magical.

The original 'Childcatcher' movie and one of Bob Mitchums best performances.

I saw it the other night at the BFI as part of the "Gothic Cinema" season. It's a wonderful film, full of great performances - not just from Bob M, but also Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish and the kids - wonderful (and creepy) music and superb expressionistic cinematography by Stanley Cortez.

For a film that was such a critical and commercial flop on its release in 1955, it has gone on to be hugely influential - you can see it in the work of David Lynch and Terrence Malick in particular.
