WASAPI and UQ2

Posted by: JSH on 20 January 2014

If I take a file straight from the NAS to the UQ2 wirelessly I can see there is no interference by any other sound source.  If I take the same file from the computer through Foobar with WASAPI to the UQ2 is that also a "clean" file or does the computer sound card interfere (and worsen?) the SQ in any way.

If this is such a hopelessly basic question I ought to know the answer to then my apologies and I'll go and sit quietly in the corner

Yes, the sound card will interfere as it has to convert to SPDIF and the WASAPI driver will interfere as well...

Streaming is ''probably'' the purest way (note I said ...probably).

If you want to use a computer as the transport, you're better off using the Dac-V1, since you don't need the streaming sections.

Either that or,

a) Get a dedicated usb to spdif converter

b) Get a audiophile grade sound card that has low jitter optical out.

Thanks for yor help.

No I don't want to use a computer as it's noisier (fan) but it is immediate.  I'll use it for low res stuff perhaps but a NAS or the USB as the main source

A supplementary please.

If I run an External HD through a networked computer in another room and point to that from Asset without using Foobar2k, does the sound again come through the other computer's sound card to the UQ2 or does it effectively act as a NAS and the UQ2 just take the file direct from the XHD?

Many thanks

Music will be streamed, just like from a NAS. It won't go through the soundcard.

If the external HD is a USB drive, it is generally not accessible from the network with Windows.

Your system will start to be complicated: you will need to have 2 computer on all the time to play your music. Maybe it is time to look at a real NAS drive....

Thanks again for the very clear reply.

I have a NAS but I ma using the External HD as backup.  It seems to load a little faster than the NAS so I as just curious about how it would work were I to play the music through it.

Now I know; many thanks
