Basic NDX Connection
Posted by: Mike-B on 21 January 2014
I am looking for what must be a very basic answer to a dumbo question
– sorry I’m only a learner
I have a small storage & backup HD that’s plug-in/out wire connected to the house laptops who run wireless off the BT HH & to the printer/scanner.
I am thinking about a wired network but am held back as a house move is coming in the future & I do not want the disruption involved especially to get another wire to the hifi. But with the future in mind, I will be looking at purchasing an NAS/UPnP now - with a future full wired network in mind - for use now with an ND-something.
So the question - can an ND-something be simply connected to its own NAS/UPnP with RAID etc, and also receive internet radio wirelessly. I know wireless is not ideal but I might need it for the time being - the BT HH is about 5m away in an adjoining hallway.
Can our expert readers see any pitfalls or other things/solution suggestions?
Hi Hook, sorry for the delay in replying. I achieve my backups by using a separate NAS that wakes up once a week, and does an automated incremental backup of my main media NAS, and then goes back to sleep again.
appears to work well. I also keep all my CDs as my ultimate physical backup. I always keep the physicals, it's been drummed into me through working my career in information technology, though the thought of re ripping 1000 plus CD is daunting.... and shouldn't really be necessary unless some sort of strange EMP wipes my hard drives. However I do have many rare CDs now that would be impossible or almost impossible to replace so I do take care.

Mrs. Hook and I share the four 2TB drives set up for Raid 5 (about 5.5TB usable), and I currently use Second Copy to backup my volumes to another, much older Buffalo LinkStation NAS. Will almost certainly get a 2nd QNAP when the Buffalo finally dies, and take advantage of their real time replication capabilities. I like that idea better than backing up to an external USB drive only because it would minimize the impact of any full NAS failure.
Question for you Hook:
If you have a copy of your NAS shares on another NAS, do both shares show up in nStream? I'm in the process of manually backing up NAS shares to another NAS, but both are showing in nStream, giving me multiple listings. My intention is to power down the backup NAS and only switch it on for replication when required. I wonder if Second Copy will be OK with this?
How do you manage this?

Hi
Just a suggestion and I don't know how feasible it would be in your setup but, could you stop the UPnP service on your backup NAS? That way in the event that your main NAS fails you just need to start it but otherwise the backed up music should be invisible to the streamer.
Thank you for that. I might have a fiddle. It is not apparent to me how I would run an automatic backup with one NAS invisible to the network but I've just remembered that I can schedule things, including startup and shutdown. So long as an application like Second Copy doesn't have a hissy fit when it can't see both.
I'm using Memeo for backing up my PC to a USB drive and I could schedule tasks between my NASs, but I find it rather clunky and I wouldn't need much of an excuse to try something else.

Harry,
Disabling the UPnP protocol won't make the device invisible to the network. It will be invisible to anything looking for UPnP devices on that network but if you are backing up one NAS device to another it typically isn't using the UPnP protocol to do so. So this should work fine.
Nice. Thank you.

Hi Harry -
When I bring up nStream, I choose an instance of Asset (running currently on a small DIY PC) as my UPnP server. I've configured Asset to only serve a specific list of folders from my main NAS device.
I do also have another instance of Asset running (on my Mac laptop), and that points to my backup NAS. If my PC or primary NAS crashes, I can use nStream to re-select my UPnP server, and not miss an evening's music.
Asset does not go off and "auto-discover" all my music folders, so there is never an issue with duplicates. I am guessing that's what's happening with you? Which UPnP server are you using?

Great stuff. Thanks Hook and thanks all.
I'm using the HDX and of course, it's discovering everything - but thanks to the advice received here it won't be for long.

Hi Simon -
I do like the idea of having two NAS devices automatically keeping each other in sync. It feels like a very good strategy for high availability, but not for disaster recovery. Fire, theft, or even an EMP could mean having to re-rip everything...
I have a USB drive that I keep at my bank in our safe deposit box. The problem with this plan is remembering to update it! And even when I do, it's a time consuming hassle...
I am starting to think that biting the bullet on a backup service is inevitable. But the thought of paying those monthly fees...forever...ugh.
