You could also use an AppleTV to do the same thing, but the setup is a bit more involved."

What type of cable connnnects the Airport Express to the ND5XS?

Thanks

...or you could plug the iPad into the USB on ND5XS.  It's less convenient, but sounds better.

I do this, but mostly I use Airplay to an Apple TV, which sounds inferior, but is fine for Spotify.

if I upgraded to Qubuz I would probably connect to the USB or buy a Sonos.

I agree that the Hi Res sounds bad through the ATv.

Doh! I didn't think I could connect direct as this didn't work with the HDX. I've a 3m iPad to usb cable so will give it a go....

Thanks!

Hi Graeme,

I've posted elsewhere on this, but here's what you need to do:

- connect the iPad;

- play something using iTunes;

- stop the song, close the app;

- open Spotify or Quobuz;

- play something.

It should work normally after that and will even display the track playing on the screen of the streamer.

Hi Graeme

Have you switched from HDX to ND5XS? If so how do they compare? I bought a SN2 in December and am very impressed with it.Currently my source is an old Meridian CD transport into a Naim Dac but I am tempted by an upgrade to an NDX or ND5XS for the added benefits of streaming but would need to trade in the Dac - low box count is important to me

Shropshire - Land of my birth!

I have not had the chance to have a proper listen yet as my music library has to be converted to FLAC from the HDX WAV rips. A short listen to Paul Simon 'Live in New York City' in hi-res after it had only just been switched on sounded very good (that's ND5XS:XP5XS) so I have high hopes.

Probably about a week away from getting the ethernet off the HDX and back onto the new (ex-dem, thanks Norman) pair.

I'll post a thread once it is up and running.

The NDX and ND5XS would both add streaming but not necessarily improve on the sound quality of the DAC + XPS. A home demo would seem to be in order.

Shropshire is not the land of my birth but I've been here over 20 years and love the area.
I look forward to your new post once you have things up and running.

Keith - a good point although the added benefits  of streaming may clinch it for me if the sound is not too inferior (which may be the case at SN2 level).

So much has been written about HDX vs NDX vs NDX vs Ndac vs ND5XS vs ND5XS etc ad infinitum and all with and without power supplies.  None of it is conclusive at that level.

I had an HDX Ndac 555PS source for a while which I downscaled to HDX 555PS which, in retrospect, I preferred.

Some say the ND5XS:XP5XS improves a shade on the NDX and that the NDX is better than the HDX and some can't hear any difference......The vanity of small differences.

Until I can afford (probably never) a substantive leap to NDS x 2 555PS I'm just not going to worry about 'differences' at the margins, and enjoy the music that I have for sensible (to me) money.

Well said - I get a lot of pleasure out of a pair of B&W MM1s connected to my computer which is not hifi but a very pleasant sound when working at the desk. A streamer with Spotify or Qobuz would be a great addition to my SN2 and anyway I don't think any hifi can beat a good live concert - rock, jazz or classical
