Ethernet home plugs
Posted by: Southweststokie on 26 January 2014
Having just switched to fibre broadband I need to by a pair of ethernet home plugs to enable me to use the house ring main to connect my Humax PVR to the router to enable iplayer service to the TV. I note that these Ethernet plugs are sold with various data transfer speeds, 200mbps, 300mbps, 500 mbps. Can anyone advise what speed is needed to support iplayer download capacity?
Thanks in advance,
Ken

I use the 500's and they're fine. The difference in cost is so minor I don't see why you'd use anything slower,
Update: I've had the Solwise 500 plugs for about 5 years now and they've never skipped a beat. I'd wholly recommend them on my experience

Thanks for your words, I guess you're right about the difference in cost and I will follow your lead.
Penarth, I worked at Aberhaw power station during 1978/79 and used to go to an Indian restaurant in Roath called the Himalaya, the best Indian I've ever experienced. Also a pub on the beach called 'The Captains Wife'. Wondered if they were still there?
Also loved the good old Brains S A (Skull Attack)!

I'm currently using products from the Devolo dlan 200 range with great success (see my recent DAC-V1 BitPerfect tests thread) but if I was starting from today then I would go for the 500 range.

Thanks Dave

I used the Devolo 200's which worked well and were very reliable.
However when I took them out I did notice a sound quality improvement, these devices send their signal over the mains and add noise. I didn't notice when I put them in as my system was not as good as when I removed them.
Can you not run a cable, you can get flat ethernet cable now that can be run very neatly under carpets?

Before you commit to using home plugs read the thread in the Streaming Audio

Using "HomePlugs"
as you will read I moved away from them - even with the 200 speed versions I was getting interference on the FM kitchen radio. What finally did it for me was that the whole of your home mains wiring becomes a transmitter.. However each to your choice of micro wave cooker house <g>

Yes I did contribute to that thread so there is no point in going over the same ground again except to say different people clearly have different experiences. You pays your money and you takes your choice.

Dave - I was giving a comment to Ken not you.

It was my comment on your thread reference which I think was worth making.
