Printer Ink Refills
Posted by: Mike-B on 27 January 2014
I am looking for advice on replacement printer ink cartridges
OEM replacement carts cost a fortune, The www is full of all sorts of "compatible" offerings & some time back I was tempted, in this case it was with my old HP & best say it was not a good experience.
Anyhow my Canon that I use almost exclusively for photo & better quality work needs food. Searching www it’s hard to not notice the price differences & wonder how it can be that so many will fits can make a living if they are inferior (assumed) to the OEM replacements.
So the question - are there any will fit cartridge makes/vendors that do as good a job as the OEM packages?
Mike,
Kind of a lateral answer to your question. I print mostly in b&w draft mode with my printer at home. Color only as needed, and typically for things like photos. So, my color ink sits around for awhile between uses. Never had any issues with my Epson OEM carts. Then I tried once refilling those originals with economy ink. They worked fine initially, but over time clogged-up with dried ink. There was no cleaning them, they became useless. Since then, I pay the premium for the new OEMs and my carts always fire ink properly, regardless of the interval between uses. It kinda sucks because over time the cost of 2-3 cart replacements exceeds the original cost of the printer/all-in-one that came equipped with quality carts.
When i had my business i always paid the xtra and got OE cartridges as i found pattern ones were just grief and i didnt have time to sod about sorting out smudges or poor quality colour printing.
Now i`m retired we no longer have a printer in the house, the reason being we print about one item a month, and every time either of us went to print something the cartridges had dried up. If it were me i would just shoparound for the best price on OE kit. Also tried the re-inking game and that was a nitemare.

I would stick to the OE ones , I tried Office Depot from Viking they left a cast of colour on some B&W prints , although when printing colour Graphs etc on plain paper, they seem fine ,could have been the Photo paper being out in the light to long though.
I buy originals online from Stinkyink - much cheaper than elsewhere and come next day delivery included in the price.
Thanks for that Michael. Stinkyink prices are excellent. I shall use them henceforth for genuine Canon carts.
All the 'compatibles' I've tried in the past have been crap/problematic.
John.
Not sure how much cheaper than OEM , but we buy from 7 DayShop for our Canon inks, no P&P either.
Hi Howard,
I've hitherto been using 7 Day Shop too, but 'Stinky' prices look pretty good; though I have not yet made a direct comparison.

I'll leave that to the financial director.
Ummm, you're not confusing the 'compatible' inks on Stinky with actual are you...? Checking Canon inks, they're more expensive than Amazon say...
I have an HP printer and have always found Argos a really cheap source of genuine HP carts - the last black 300 I bought there was just £8.99!
Thanks for the input folks, having considered your opinions of the "will fit" carts & the reviews on www for these & refilling; It seems all have a %%% of risk especially if infrequent use is a factor, so that has answered my question - thanks
You've spurred me on to do some checking & checked prices for the same genuine Canon multicolour pack at the 3 stores you've listed & found it’s still not exactly as straight forward as a simple price.
Canon PGi-5 & Cli-8 Inks pack - Incl VAT & Free delivery
Stinkyink £57.46 (ink volume - 1x 26ml & 4x 13ml)
Amazon £56.13 (ink volume not spec’d)
7 Day Shop £39.04 (ink volume - 1x 19ml & 4x 9ml)
If simple cost is considered then Stinkyink are the most expensive, but if the all-important ink volume is considered they are cheaper - 0.0135/ml vs 0.0140/ml at 7 Day Shop
Then dig deeper into Amazon where the ink volume is not specified - not helpful - but I have a new PGi-5 cart that was bought from Amazon & it is marked 26ml, so Amazon is cheaper after all.
Order placed but still open for ideas next time around.
As far as I'm concerned, if SWMBO brought a 'will fit' cartridge into the marital home it would be grounds for divorce
Canon CLI-8 Colour Inkjet Cartridge Multipack

Hi Blueknowz, I checked out Viking a few days ago. They do have some nice deals, problem is these deals are packaged with other items & its hard to see the real price, plus they headline the non-VAT price which can catch out the unwary
The package you have posted is not the same as my pricing comparison & will not fit my printer,
The CLI-8 Multipack is a 3x cart pack - my required CLI-8/ PGI-5BK Multipack is a 5x cart pack
Viking don’t sell this specific Canon package, the 5 individual bought carts cost £67.15 & are more expensive.
Canon website says that the inks are 19ml and 9ml so are the Stinkyink carts genuine?
and we think beer and petrol is expensive?

Same question I asked myself H, seems even Canon are confused
The single large black cart I have is clearly 26ml & it is in a Canon box & it was previously part of the 5x cart package I last bought from Amazon so its 4x buddies should have been 13ml
I will wait to see what arrives in the next day or so & will post what it sez on the box.
The Amazon package arrived this morning
Its for sure a genuine Canon
Tank volumes are 1x 26ml black 4x 19ml others, so it seems this is the better VFM
Pity as this seems to be the most reliable way to get ink but at what I feel is rip off prices. What should be a dominant Canon replacement cart marketplace position has been left wide open to all the will fit & refill operators.
