London Trip & Naim Tour questions

Posted by: DrMark on 27 January 2014

Wasn't sure where this best fit, but to avoid incurring the wrath of some I stayed with the Padded Cell.

I may be in London in early April, and wanted to know from those with boots on the ground knowledge, how long is the Naim tour, at what time do they start during the day, are they only available on certain days, and would it be possible to do a day trip from London to the Salisbury area, and catch both the Naim tour and a trip out to Stonehenge?

My hope to be to do the Naim tour, lunch, and then head to SH, then back to London.  But I have no idea whether the logistics of such a trip fall in the realm of reality, so any advice/help/direction is much appreciated...including cost information on both sites, and best means of conveyance from the London area to Salisbury.  (I do not anticipate having a car at my disposal.)

Thanks in advance to any & all.

A quick check on nationalrail dot co dot uk shows weekday trains from London Waterloo to Salisbury taking about 1.5 hours and costing approx £40 (one way).

Leaving at 8:20 you'd be in Salisbury at approx 9:50 and in time for a tour at, say, 10:30, presuming Naim will do them to order!

It's a little more tricky to see how you'd get to Stonehenge from Salisbury, although there may be day trips (coach?) from Salisbury, Google will tell you that. You could therefore get a coach to Stonehenge and back and then get a return train to London at the end of the day.

Possible therefore but would need careful planning and execution!

Have fun,

This is very doable, although it will be a long day!

I believe Naim do the tours on Mondays from 10am till 4pm.  You need to arrange this first, I suggest going for the first or last of the day.

Train to Salisbury from London takes an hour and a half, London Station is London Waterloo. There is an 07:50 train (look on National Rail's website), get there early as at 07:50 Waterloo will be busy and it is a very large station and can be a bit overwhelming if it is your first time there. There are excellent display boards that tell you your platform.  It's worth buying the tickets a day or so before so you are not having to queue in the rush hour. Train gets into Salisbury at 09:19.

Once in Salisbury you can get a taxi to Naim, it's only 3 miles so shouldn't cost too much and should get you there by 10am.  Tours take 2 hours.

Once finished, go back into Salisbury and find lunch, Salisbury is a charming city and very compact, it is worth a look round and the cathedral is magnificent, but you may not have time for this unless you skip Stonehenge.

Regarding Stonehenge there are tours that depart from the City including the railway station, if you Google Stonehenge tour from Salisbury you will find them.  It's only 12 miles from Salisbury so a taxi is not out of the question.

Getting back to London by train from Salisbury should be straightforward, there are 2 trains an hour until gone 10pm.

Hope this helps

Dr Mark

I last visited the factory some 30 odd years ago and would not mind doing another tour to catch up with things.

If your visit to the UK comes off and tours are on do let me know. I`m sure i can pick you up and then just blat down the M3 to Salisbury.

Is anyone else living in london/Surrey up for this?? may as well fill a car or 2,meet up and make a day of it. Please post if you are interested.

mista h - that would be excellent if it could be worked out.  Always a nice thing to meet a fellow Naim forum member.  As I get more specifics on the exact details of my trip (including nailing down with certainty if it will take place - it looks promising at this moment, and should be confirmed within a couple of weeks) I can reach out to you here on the board and of course the more the merrier from the baord for such an excursion!

I do know that it would be April 4 - 11 time frame - that week.  Other details TBD.

I was only discussing a factory tour with my dealer today. Unfortunately I'll be playing golf in Spain with my mates the 1st week in April.

Steve, I really hope that's not a call for sympathy....

I don't know - it depends on Steve's golf game...

I shot a 68 once, but then the back 9 killed me...

Depending on dates, I might well be up for it. Split the petrol, would work out quite cheap I suspect (cheaper than the trains anyway). We could teach the good Doc the ways of Proper Football on the way down.

Never visited the factory so would be interested in meeting up at the factory, let me know your intended date and I'd like to join you all. Great idea DrJohn.

Cheers Pete

That would be awesome - I will definitely post here once I know for certain my dates, etc. and then a date can be cleared for the soiree!

For proper football you could take him to watch West ham play...................on second thoughts.

Off to Swansea later today,i think we could get a result if he doesn`t play that Donkey Senderos.

Shall I guess DrMark has ample opportunity to see "proper" football with Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. The Lady Tar Heels have got soccer down to a science.

First thing would be to drop a mail to Steve Hopkins at the factory to see what can be done re. a tour.  It may be that a dealer has a tour arranged and you could join that.  Make your plans from there.

Thanks for the tip Richard - is Steve's email available on the Naim site?  Of course I would wait until things are further "firmed up" before engaging him, but that is a good plan you have presented.

The old ones are the good ones Mark. When you decide on a date I'll try and come if I'm not away.

It's always a guaranteed good time whenever a group from here get together.

Step 1 was today: put in for the time off @ work.  Then will be book the flight, and finally, look for a place to stay, this last of which I may again kindly commandeer the aid of those of you who know the area.
