Free speech at Naim

Posted by: Drew Turner on 29 January 2014

I'm very impressed with  amount of freedom Naim allows it's forum members to express their thoughts , observations and criticisms on a wide range of topics . Some of which have nothing to to do with Naim products or Hi Fi in general. Forum members and visitors to this forum are freely allowed to discuss and make positive and negative comparisons to Naim competitors and occasionally openly criticize Naim products without fear of reprimand for the most part.  Very refreshing of  Naim I  must say. I once  belonged to another forum of a very well known designer/manufacturer  of  British speakers. The  speaker designer is brilliant but thinned skinned and petty.Very mean spirited , condescending and intolerant to anyone who dares to offer up an opposing opinion to his  or minor criticism of his products. Any posts he disagreed with were heavily  edited or removed  completely. In contrast ,if the  Naim moderator , Richard disagrees with a comment or post he is always very respectful towards  the offender .Thank you Naim

Completely agree.

Other forums I have experience of are very constrained allowing very little in the way of lateral thinking/open discussion away from the primary focus.

Which kind of takes the fun out of it.

The 'light touch' admin control on Naim forum is seen occasionally but always handled in a professional and clear manner.

You're talking about Harbeth, of course. ;-)

There have been a handful of people over the years who have abused the openness of the Forum - and the free, frank and fearless comment it condones, on behalf of Naim.

Occasionally, someone gets the chop - but in all such cases that I'm aware of, such disciplinary action has been completely warranted.

Yes totally agree and that is why this forum  is worth my time.

Some forum of a certain British speaker manufacturer would be an extreme example of moderation on the other side of the extreme end. ;-)

Thanks Drew,

it's a fine balance between trying to allow as much freedom of speech and expression here while protecting against those who wish to abuse such freedom, whether personally or commercially.  That's why there are rules and why there are agreements made with trade members as to what is and what isn't appropriate to post or discuss.  It will never please those who want a total free for all but without would be chaos.

However, Naim have no fear of valid and well reasoned criticism here and always take great interest. There is no point in having a forum unless you can take the good as well as the bad and learn something from it.

While I agree that Naim gives participants comparatively free-reign to say what they think here, my only marriage has been around longer than this forum, and I’d hardly call that forever (though at times it can feel that way).

Nice post Drew. And yes, in my experience the moderating is fair. I've been on here nearly 15 years now, and I'd guess that the value of my Naim equipment has been, for me, bolstered by this virtual place.

Long Live the Freedom!

Never mind about free speech for forum members, how about free Statements!
