A luxury UK hotel for Christmas?

We are just at the very early stages of wondering what we can do to avoid all the usual (I'll be polite) seasonal kerfuffle.

Have any forumites had a successful break of, say, three nights? City or country, but must be up there with the bestest.

Tony,

I've always liked Hotel Du Vin, and have been for wine/meals in several of them. Very nicely done, and good food with a sommelier who knows their stuff! Went to the fat duck in 2012 and our sommelier there was trained at HDV.

I've been to HDV at Birmingham (stayed overnight, great room), Tunbridge Wells, and Cheltenham (eaten there several times and the sommelier remembered what wine I'd ordered a few months after my first visit), and having moved to Bristol last year will be trying Bristol soon also. There are several others...

Not sure whether that's top notch enough, but certainly very good for the money... (Birthday meal with great wine for my wife and I was getting on for £200).

The Bristol Marriott - not the one where the HiFI show is held can be very pleasant with a good restaurant in an amazing room baronial hall.

Last week, Bindon Bottom in lovely Lulworth Cove was voted - can't remember by whom - as the best B&B in Britain. It was featured on Radio 4.

I've not stayed there but I know someone who has and they say that the TripAdvisor reviews - 459 in all, 456 "Excellent", 3 "Very Good" - are spot on. It is, apparently THAT GOOD.

A place where I have stayed is Dome House in Bowness in the Lake District. It was originally intended as a private residence, and featured on the TV show Grand Designs. However the owners were forced to take in guests to make ends meet. They so enjoyed it that they are now a guest house. The views are spectacular.

For luxury hotels, you can't beat Claridges in London, but it is very expensive. The Covent Garden Hotel and the fabulous Haymarket Hotel, both in the West End, are funky alternatives.

I've stayed in lovely hotels. But specifically I'm after experiences at Christmas.

Well, if last year's doc on Claridge's is anything to go by, you can't beat that hotel at Xmas.

We spent Boxing day night at the Cameron House hotel by Loch Lomond. Fabulous in all respects. Would recommend it highly. Breakfast menu is amazing, staff are attentive but not stuffy, facilities and activities are first class.

Can you tell we had a  great time?

Chester Grosvenor Hotel & Spa - not been for Christmas but can imagine it ticking the boxes. They have great service and arranged a bottle of Champagne and goodies for my parents for one of their wedding anniversaries - all ordered long distance by me, sight unseen.

We stayed at the Chester Grosvenor last year for a night. I'll be polite and say I doubt I'll stay there again.

Greywalls looks interesting, and for us at least, different.  Thanks!

Edit: ditto Cameron House.

Steve,

Lots of these top hotels are fully booked already, or the restaurants are. We'll probably end up at home eating a quorn log (Not).

Greywalls is just up the road from us. Lovely quiet location in Gullane. Hotel is small and the focus is on  Food which is top notch. Good for a peaceful indulgent stay if you enjoy reading a book in the lounges or taking walks in the countryside. Edinburgh is closeby if you need a city hit.
