Track names all have .flac added to them
Posted by: David Nelson on 03 February 2014
Today I got myself an Ipad mini and I’ve loaded n-Stream. I’m using Synology Media Server on a DS114. If I tell Media Server to transcode the FLAC files to WAV the individual track names on n-Stream all show with ‘.flac’ added to the end. I had the same problem with Kinsky on my PC. If I turn the transcoding off the track names return to normal.
Anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?
Thanks

+1 interested to know if this is a Naim or Synology issue...?
A few folks running Syn NAS servers are running minim server for their streaming. Be interesting to know if they still have the .flac file extension displayed?
Are you sure it's a problem, versus working as intended? I might see the point of a server appending .flac when it's transcoding to flac.
In any event, it sounds like it's the server, not n-Stream, which just displays what it's sent.
I think this must be a Synology issue as I had the same thing happen running Kinsky on a laptop. I've just loaded Synology Audio Station as that does it too!

Bart you could well be right but it certainly spoils the 'clean look' of the track listings in Nstream but nothing more than that!

Agreed! The bit of ocd in me (we all have some) hates stuff like that.

I can confirm that when running Minimserver on a Synology 212j NAS, the .flac extention is removed when set to transcoding. Cant say it ever bothered me before when i was using Media Server, but i know what you mean.

Problem solved! Maybe it was a bit OCB but the ‘.flac’ extension appearing on the track names was really getting on my nerves. Overnight I used dbPoweramp batch convertor to create a WAV copy of everything in a new folder on my Synology NAS. Transcoding on the NAS is now turned off. Now the track names and all the artwork show properly on n-Stream and it sounds better!
I will copy the original FLAC files to a backup drive today.

Thanks for the nfo Graeme
Update: Just when I thought I was home and dry, I added a couple more cd rips to the Synology NAS only to find the majority of the artwork disappeared from both n-Stream and a copy of Kinsky I have on my pc. So this had to be a problem with the NAS.
I’m no expert on the workings of this Synology beast, but I discovered that if I re-index the files by running Main Menu > Control Panel > Media Indexing Service the art work comes back. Not too sure at the moment of the implications of this, I guess if any files are added or change in the Music folder, the Media Indexing Service must be run.
Can someone explain why you would want to transcode a flac file to wav?

I asked myself that not long back and decided to try it - even on my modest equipment it sounded different, and to my mind, better and I have kept it that way since. I don't lose anything from doing it that way and I prefer the sound
Oh right, I shall have to give it a try with some tracks then

The Media indexing service monitors the folders shown in the 'indexed folders' tab. You shouldn't need to reindex everytime you add a rip to your NAS music collection? If you have a lot of photo's on your NAS the re-index can take days! & uses a lot of the CPU cycles to do so (lots of moaning about this issue online).
