I’ve had this LP box-set on pre-order for a month or so [with mixed feelings of expectation] the release date has been put back a couple of times already so that may happen again.

But im keen to hear opinions from the Opera and Mozart experts of the forum:

Is it worth buying opera on brand new vinyl?

Is this a good version of Le nozze di Figaro to invest in?

How good is conductor, Teodor Currentzis?

Has anyone else here pre-ordered this set?

Please feel free to discuss : )

Dear Debs,

I'd wait till it is released, and try to listen to the excerpts that they are sure to play on Radio Three on Record Review.

I think it's CD Review now, but Saturday mornings  ... I never took that much notice of the commentaries, but that is just me.

I have only rarely caught the programme in the last ten years or so, but then I have always tried to stick to buying records by favourite musicians ...

I have never heard of these. They may be first rate, or there may be a good reason why they are not household names round here.

Best of luck, from George

The CD is in the classical charts now, and an excerpt was played in this morning's breakfast show on Radio 3.

It sounded lovely- I like the lack of vibrato. However some listeners texted the studio to say they didn't get it.

I might wait until the blu-ray comes out in a month before deciding whether to buy it. I am very tempted though.

Thanks Aleg. I got quite excited by the studio master for 30 Euros, but unfortunately it "is not available in my country" which is the UK.

Hi Dozey.  Try emailing QoBuz.  They have often been very helpful in removing restrictions on accounts.

High Res is at the moment only €23.39 for 3 discs both in 2 channel as in 5.1 channel.

a shame they don't offer it in the UK.

could indeed try to contact them and see if they will remove download restrictions.

cheers

Why not have a look for a good s/h set?  If you're in London it's worth a visit to Harold Moore's or the Tape and Video exchange in Notting Hill.  There are also one or two online sellers - can't post a link because of forum rules.

I'm a poor touchstone here, as I don't (didn't) own an opera between the death of Handel and Philip Glass, as I abhor the vocal stylings involved.

A couple of weeks ago I heard Simone Kertes sing an aria from this set and was completely captivated.

A couple of days dithering while I ditched a lifetime of prejudice led to me buying this set... and thank goodness I did. This is wonderful, buckets of orchestral attack and vocals as full of passion as they are lacking in vibrato.

i can easily see why this would upset traditionalists, but I'll be waiting for the next two, as well as ordering Currentzis' Requiem.

How can there be any s/h sets if it hasn't been released yet?

Amazon.uk - This title will be released on March 31, 2014.

Mozart wasn't a traditionalist,

and i bet he'd really dig this version ; )

Sony has a very strange selection for new vinyl releases.

I was wondering at this Domingo's Verdi vinyl to see if it's any good. Oddly, Kaufmann's Verdi is not available in vinyl set.

I'll be interested in getting the Don Giovanni set, tho. No Magic Flute!

Just a brief update to say my 4 x LP box set has arrived! : )

The presentation is excellent, nice libretto with translation into English {something I find very important so I can follow along the story line to link with understanding the expressed emotion} and the 4 Lps all good quality pressings, 180gm Sony vinyl in poly-paper inner sleeves without a hint of any static. I’m being unusually naughty by not having pre-cleaned this vinyl - plonking strait onto the sondek, excellent SQ, and there really isn’t any static! : )

[…yet].

The music is far too subjective, my jury is still out. This is my very first recording of Le Nozze di Figaro i’ve listened to in full. It gives an odd sense of playful music-hall character, i’m enjoying the accents of all the voices, but this may take a few plays, and to be in the right mood, to get to know and appreciate.

But so far I’m very happy with this purchase : )
