JRMC on unitiqute2: possible without an HTPC?

Posted by: Henry2 on 04 February 2014

Hi all,

I have recently listened to a unitiqute2 + nap100 for my CM5 speakers. I am a great music fan, and looking for a nice all-round and future-proof investment. Loved the sound and options offered by the qute, but am hesitant about one thing before purchasing the qute, which is related to user-interface options of streaming:

(1) I like the interface of n-stream but also enjoy JRMC and the JRemote app on my ipad. I would like to be able to use the JRemote app and perhaps in the future other apps to access files from a NAS. But can I use non n-stream apps to stream to the unitiqute without a pc/mac/htpc being turned on?

My idea was as follows: connect a NAS with UPNP to the network, the unitiqute to the network via UPNP, and  use my ipad wirelessly connected to the network with JRemote to play everything.  I would then sporadically open the PC upstairs for organising/downloading/ripping music files etc, but not having to turn this on when downstairs listening.

If this is not possible, then what is the main benefit of the qute's streaming capabilities (or that of any other streamer for that matter) versus a setup such as e.g. nait5i + DAC + mac-mini + NAS being controlled by ipad?

Thanks for your advice and help in advance!

Best,

Henry

Hi Henry

If I understand you correctly you will have the music on the NAS which is connected to the Qute over a wired network. If this is the case and the NAS is running the UPnP server then you can definitely have the computer switched off as it will play no part in the process of playing the music.

The Qute acts as a UPnP renderer so any software which can connect to such a renderer will be able to send music to it from the NAS.

I have a Qute2 with a Synology NAS, running Minim, wired to the same switch. I then use a Samsung Android tablet as a remote connected to the network via wireless and I can stream music from the NAS on virtually any application which uses UPnP. I use UPnPlay and BubbleUPnP, etc. No n-stream at all.

Hope this helps.

Yes that definitely helps! I will look around on the jrmc forum to see if jrmc supports the nas being the server with pc turned off.

JRiver has to be running on a computer. There is currently no upnp version of their software unfortunately.

Hi Henry

Sorry, completely missed the JRiver reference. If you want to stream to the Qute with the computer off you could always leave whatever UPnP server is supplied on the NAS running and stream from that anyway when your machine is off. I have 2 servers running on my Synology, the supplied one and Minim and have not hit any problems with both running.

JRemote 'talks to' JRiver - hence JRiver needs to be running somewhere if you want to use JRemote. Doesn't have to be a fancy pc - a cheapo would do.
