WAV to FLAC conversion errors

Posted by: hungryhalibut on 09 February 2014

My UnitiServe is trundling away converting the collection to FLAC. It's taken two days to do about 9,000 files, with about 17,000 still to go.

Looking at the encoding log, I see that about six albums (out of what must be 700 converted so far) haven't converted. In some cases, it's one cd out of a two disc or four disc set that has not been changed. The message log shows that there has been an error, for example:

Source File '(internal)\music\MQ\Oscar Peterson\Exclusively for My Friends [Box Set][CD 4] \09 - Take the -A- Train.WAV' Problem with e:\music\MQ\Oscar Peterson\Exclusively for My Friends [Box Set][CD 4] \09 - Take the -A- Train.WAV. [BASS_ERROR_FILEOPEN]

I wonder what it means?

When I look in nStream, the album has not converted, so is still WAV, while the other discs in the box set are in FLAC.

Once the whole process finishes I imagine that I will have to look in the log and try to convert them one at a time.

I really wasn't expecting that to happen and it seems weird. Has anyone else found this, and how did you fix it?

Okay, not the same arrangement but it might be the same problem:

I rip to M/S WMA Lossless and then convert to FLAC, using Foorbar2000.  There can be problems, usually with individual tracks, in two (so far) identified instances:

- if the file name already exists (common in my first music love - film soundtrack music)

and

- if the file name is too long (I have yet to identify how many characters are allowed).

If the latter problem, I shorten the name in WMA, convert, then add the full name using my Tag editor (Tag&Rename).

Perhaps your skipped albums have this too long file name problem?

Hmm, it's possible.

Just a guess based on the "FILEOPEN" portion of the error message, but were you perhaps listening to that song while the conversion was taking place?

If the last step of the conversion is to remove the WAV copy, then perhaps the converter process might insist on having an exclusive file lock before proceeding?

A nice idea, but no, I wasn't listening to any of the albums that have failed. It's really odd that part of a set converts and part doesn't.

Take the -A- Train.WAV

Do the problem files all have non alphanumeric characters in the filename, such as a hyphen which could be misinterpreted as a minus sign. I recall that Bart had issues with this, but I don't recall if they were identical to yours. In his case, IIRC, replacing the offending characters with the _ (underscore) fixed the problem.

Googleing the error suggests that the problem could be due to unusual characters in the file name, I would try a rename to remove dashes, ampersands etc.

'Exclusively for My Friends [Box Set][CD 4] '

A folder name with a space on the end, possibly this?

I've been looking at the file characters. If you take the Oscar Peterson as an example, everything is exactly the same in the CDs that converted, as the one that didn't. I'm stumped.

I got a few of those messages too during my conversion, and I just ended up leaving them as .wav rips.  I did not follow up with Naim to see what it might be.
