NAS - ND5XS - NDAC .......Will it play FLAC Files? Help!

Posted by: GraemeH on 11 February 2014

I'm confused!

Can I use the ND5XS into NDAc to play FLAC's From a NAS?

Do I use the DC1 cable (BNC) between ND5 XS and NDAC to achieve this?

Thanks

The streamer will play FLAC quite happily. Stream to the ND over Ethernet, and connect the ND to the DAC.

Thanks Nigel - The NDAC is 286XXX serial (2010) so I guess I need to ensure it has the firmware update when it arrives on Thursday.

Anyone know how to check this?

Cheers,

Why would you need to check the firmware? The dac just converts whatever signal is squirted into it from the streamer? I may be missing something of course!

There was a firmware update to allow the DAC to play 192/96 files.

You'll have to download the manual Graeme, checking the firmware involves switching off the DAC, holding down something on restart and noting the. sequence that the lights flash ( I kid you not!)

I bought one I was told was the latest firmware but when I heard gaps on hires replay I checked and it was on an earlier version.

A 2010 firmware upgrade enabled the reading of FLAC's I only just discovered! I was panicking as I've ordered the NDAC and was poised to bid on a DC1 cable. When reading the manual I only saw reference to WAV's so thought I'd goofed....

I can relax now.....won the DC1 too!

Cheers

Of course, if you get the NAS to transcode to WAV, the issue goes away. I'm converting FLAC to WAV in the UnitiServe, and it sounds a lot better than streaming FLACs.

Once the streamer has processed the stream and is outputting via the spdif output the format doesn't matter as the streamer has converted it.

I think you will find the firmware update relating to FLAC is for memory sticks, see https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...ply=3819189068544376
