I saw this and immediately went out to buy her debut album - which hasn't left my turntable all week. Wonderful guitar playing.

Anyone else like?

Err, Peter, the clue is in the title of the embedded video, funnily enough - "Love Won't Be Leaving" by Anna Calvi

Her album's on Domino and is called "Anna Calvi" and, along with PJ Harvey's newie, is one of the best records you're likely to hear all year.

Hi Kevin

Ah, I don’t see anything but your writing, no video. There is a small white box above your words but that’s it.

Thanks, I will take a look (listen) to your recommendation.

Regards
Peter

It is an awful video, quality-wise - but I'll give her a whirl on the basis of the comparison to PJ Harvey.....

One of the members of the forum alerted me to her music but just can't get into her.

I'll make a comparison with PJ Harvey ie , "She isn't as good as PJ Harvey"

Like ewemon I can't get her either, I listened on Spotify, didn't make it to the end.

Me too. Did nothing for me

Like Peter, I can only see the "white square" - what is wrong with our settings?

I do have the album however, it came via the Rough Trade "CD of the month club" in January. It did sound very fresh and repeat-playable when new but I do not think it will become a long-term favourite. Not sure of the PJH comparison, maybe her second album will confirm her direction.

Bought this on vinyl couldn't even get to the end of side 1, & I have tried a good few times ! maybe I need to be in the right mood, it just seems to grate with me the sound is awful to my ears!

Ron
Ron, out of interest what do you make of this months's album (Lykke Li)?

I hated it yet I keep reading great reviews.

I joined the Rough Trade club this winter and I'm managing about a 50% success rate at the moment. Josh Pearson and Sea of Bees where worthwhile.

Hello Bruce, we must have joined at about the same time - I have had the same four so far. The Lykke Li I am not sure about, I certainly do not think it is exceptional in any way. As for the others, well Sea of Bees is interesting but not one that I would play all the way through in one concentrated sitting and as for Josh Pearson - I think it is one of the most moving and well constructed singer/songwriter efforts for many years but needs to be listened to in the right frame of mind and with an appropriate "ambience" to the listening environment ie if you were feeling really down then this album would just make matters worse! On the whole I preferred the Lift to Experience (only) effort particularly "These are The Days", it is hard to reconcile the two albums being primarily the same guy.

The RT album of the month club is a good idea but I am still waiting for a "wow" factor offering of a, shall we say, more guitar orientated variety.

I'm sticking with the Album Club idea for now, I like the exposure to artists that are new to me, and perhaps being encouraged to listen to stuff I might otherwise pass by.

I could not agree more re Josh Pearson, very much something for specific times/moods but remarkable when it hits the spot. Not heard his other album.

I use the RT album club on and off and have discovered some great stuff and then I have found presents for some of my friends with the more hard core which I cannot get into.

Bought the Anna Calvi elpee on vinyl and think it is excellent

I saw Anna Calvi on Jools on Friday night, I thought she looked and sounded amazing, will definately give her album a go.

Thought Anna Calvi on Later wasn't bad but every song I've heard on magazine CDs left me unmoved. I think the PJ comparison is erroneous either way. Quite like her new album but I'm not hearing the protest angle people are raving about. Have to say I love the Lykke Li. Absolutely astonishing in places - "Sadness Is A Blessing" and "Silent My Song" for two. The former channels Shadow Morton and The Shangri Las in a way that makes the likes of Duffy and Wino look the one note amateurs I think they are and is a top notch vocal performance. Tour de force is an appropriate term. The latter takes the above refs and mates them with a seriously disturbing lyric. Now, I can see why some people might not get it. The dance music elements are off-putting if that's not your thing and very much an acquired taste but once you get the 60s vein that runs through the whole album it makes a lot more sense. "I Follow Rivers" for example. She's a raw talent for sure but I'd also say she's highly individual and already capable of great things. If you have never loved 60s girl groups forget it though. This won't be for you. Love the Josh album too.

Got this album and think it is good . In this mould I would heartily recommend Nina Nastasia's Outlander, a tremendous album produced by Steve Albini which is what initially grabbed my attention.
