Broken DVD
Posted by: Dungassin on 13 February 2011
Bugger. I was digging a DVD (Season 5, Angel) out of the case because a visitor wanted to see. Damn me if I didn't break the disc (Disc 3, if you're interested) getting it out. The centre mounting in the case didn't release when I pressed on it, and I was pressing the release and gently lifting the edge of the disc which decided to split radially to the centre hole.
Damn, I'll have to buy a new set of Season 5. Am I the only one who finds that these "release" mechanisms don't always work?

If it's a radial split, you may find that if you're very careful it will still read. Carefully try gluing with superglue from the label side. Make sure you keep the disc absolutely flat and the join as tight as possible. Otherwise try copying it onto a blank DVD using DVDfab or similar. I've salvaged a couple of split discs this way.

Firstly, 'Angel!', you being serious?
Really?
Secondly, I should imagine this terrible terrible teenage girls TV show is available on line somewhere.

Not a Buffy fan then Gary? Not quite my cup of tea but then each to his own; why so angry?
I've had a couple of CDs that have split in a similar way but miraculously both are perfectly playable. I guess the error correction reads past the defect.

To the OP's question. Whilst I've never broken a disc, I do find the centre retention mechanisms are "variable" in quality (mostly shite). And don't get me started on jewel cases.

It's OK, I know from past experience you don't like it (or Buffy). Just try to be more tolerant of other people's likes/dislikes. I have already ordered a new copy.Really?

Yes very much each to his or her own. Unless we're talking about Big Brother. There is no excuse whatsoever for liking that.
But sorry Gary that was quite a juvenile response. And it's better to avoid spelling mistakes when putting people down. Cuts into the credibility somewhat.
My mother loved Buffy and Angel and she was in her seventies at the time so I've got a soft spot for them even though I never watched them.
And I reckon I've been within a millimetre of doing the same thing. The packaging for some of this stuff is really crap.

Not just teenage girls Gary. My wife loved it too ( and a few years the wrong side of her teenage years).

Just shows that some of our contributors seem unable to accept other people's foibles and are a little too ready to pigeon-hole programs. With bookshops I often find the most interesting items in the Children's section! I dare say there are things which Gary likes that I think are awful, but I wouldn't presume to criticise him for liking them. A little more tolerance, please!
Incidentally, I would have attempted to repair the broken DVD, but there were a few bits chipped off at the break which I suspect would have defeated error correction.
