Can't get naimuniti to detect my NAS

Posted by: latecomer on 15 February 2011

Hi guys,

Am using a d-link dns 320 via a wired connection to my router. PC and naimuniti also connected to the router via wired connections.

Problem is when I go into the naimuniti's uPnP source, it only detects my PC.

I'm not sure what I've done wrong here, anyone can help? My goal is to play everything from the NAS.

Thanks all!

You will need to enable the built in UPnP AV Server on your NAS - UPnP Server Settings and select the folder that contains the music files.

Manual ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dns/DNS-...l/DNS-320_Manual.pdf

I'm assuming that you have set up folders/shares correctly.

Tog, you are an absolute lifesaver! Should've guessed I was making a newbie mistake. Thanks.

Strange, on one or two occasions my Uniti is streaming music from my NAS ok, then when browsing the library suddenly the Uniti stops playing, kicks me back to the main menu and cannot detect the NAS. Anyone else encountered something similar?

Whats your network like, what is you router, how is your uniti and nas connected to the network

Once or twice in the beginning - discovered that the radio frequency on my Airport Extreme base stations was rather crowded changed frequency and hey presto! no more problems ...

Hi garyi, I'm on a wired connection both from my uniti to router and nas to router. There's a 5 port switch connected to the router as well as I need more ports than the 4 available on my router. Not sure if that affects anything, but neither my uniti nor nas are attached through it. Router is some ISP provided 2wire hgv2700. Ip addresses: Uniti 192.168.1.2 Nas. 192.168.1.3 The uniti is ALWAYS able to detect my pc (also on wired connection, running win 7), just having difficulty detecting my nas sometimes. I'm suspecting it's my router. But it that was the case it's strange that I can detect my pc without fail. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys!

Hi tog, you're referring to radio frequencies for wireless connections right? I'm currently using wired connections for both my nas and uniti.

Latecomer, it might be the router, it might also be the NAS in terms of it doing a UPNP look up whilst you are trying to use it.

There seems to be a cutting off of the network going on, and from that perspective I would be eye balling that router or switch.

The only other suggestion I have is make sure both devices are connected to the switch. Cannot see it making a difference but worth a try I guess.

Just tried connecting both the uniti and the nas to the switch. Same problem: can detect the pc, but not the nas. looks like my only option is to buy another router and try my luck? Furthermore I've just tried using a few thumb drives to play some files via usb, and all don't seem to work. It says no usb drive attached. I was able to play from thumb drives just a few weeks ago. Strange thing is, connecting an iPod is ok! Ahhh my uniti seems to be giving me quite a few problems.

Hi garyi, I've just bought a new router and preliminary tests seem to indicate it's not a router issue. I was able to sight my NAS for a brief moment while setting up the new router, but now I'm facing the same issue: uniti can't detect my NAS. But both my pc and other av streamer (ac ryan player) on my network are able to get files off the NAS. So you mentioned it might be the NAS doing a uPnP lookup? Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks in advance! I'm at my wits end here.

A factory reset, new router and disabling/re-enabling the upnp settings on my NAS seems to have solved the problem! Thanks to all who helped, now I just hope this will last. Enjoy your naims everyone!

Sorry Latecomer, I was latecoming back to this thread!

Also sorry for getting you to spend out when it would appear to  be a software issue on the NAS, but I think long term a decent 'not free from ISP' router is always a good move.

Oh not to worry at all, I am very happy with the new one, better wireless signal throughout my home now. But I agree, it's better to have your own router.

I am glad your problem is sorted. If it happens again try turning off the UPnP on the NAS. I have mine off permanently and never had an issue. My dealer advised that there could be a conflict.

Gerry I should imagine the OP very much needs the UPNP on, otherwise the point of the nas becomes a bit muddy.

Certainly I would not consider running say a UPNP server from a computer which is hooking up to the nas over the network when the nas has a built in UPNP server anyhow, Seems a bit silly that.

Gary,

I use Unitiserve where this is definitely not the case as the Serve has its own UPnP, I  now note the that the OP has the Uniti which may be different.

However with the Serve you should switch the NAS UPnP off.

Apologies if I have misled.

Yea in the respect the serve may well be using the nas for files but its the 'computer', because its naim dealing with naim the system works.

For folks with uniti's and no serve then I would suggest that doing what you can with the UPNP on the nas is the starting point.
