Using OS X to copy files between Synology nas's. Authentication?
Posted by: Bart on 22 February 2014
I'm not able to Google up an answer it seems . . .
I've got two Synology nas's, and when logged in to each as admin, using Finder to try to copy a folder from one nas to the other brings up an OS X dialog box that says "Modifying Diskstation requires an administrator name and password. To move “uservebackup”, click Authenticate."
Any hints?? I cannot find anything that says "Authenticate" to click!
A belated thanks, Allen. I too think it's a Finder / AFP issue, as I also started getting an error just trying to delete a folder on my older nas. I've never had permissions (??) problems like that before, and I don't know what started it. But it might yet be a problem with the network protocols as run by the nas, vs. as run by my Macbook.
I did try your suggestion, but it's not letting me log on with the new id I created -- only with the original admin and guest id's. Something is amiss.
It sounds like you are trying to copy an entire share, you will be able to copy the contents but don't try copying the share,
In other words where you are trying to copy to, create a new share called 'Uservebackup'
On the original Userve back up open it, and drag the contents to the new Uservebackup
I have to say all in all copying between network shares on a mac has been shit to say the least for me, and its not getting any better. You would be best to get to grips with either rsync or FTP which will allow you to copy directly between the two nases without the mac being involved (besides instigating the command)
Thanks Gary. I will see if that works. I *think* I tried copying a folder from within one of those shared folders and got the same message, but I'll try again.
Any primers on using ftp or rsync? My current work-around is to use Synology's backup utility.
My WIndows 7 laptop is happy to mount shares on both nases and copy files/folders from one to the other . . . so it must be an OS X thing

Hi Bart -
IIRC, the MacOS Finder has a "Connect as..." button.
Is it possibly auto-connecting you as "Guest" to one or both NASs?
Might be worth manually (re)connecting as Admin.
Good luck!

Thanks Hook -- I do 'connect as' admin to both, and get that message. Frustrating!
As I say, OSX is an ageing OS and the whole networking thing unless mac to mac tends to be shit.
I would recommend the use of File Station (via your browser), using the address of the destination NAS, to transfer files from the source NAS. This keeps the Mac completely out of the equation, which should also improve transfer speed.

This indeed appears to have been my problem. I learned something new -- what look like folders on the nas are really "shares," and cannot be copied per se.
"Doh" as Homer Simpson would say.
But it's still not an efficient way to copy files; using the Synology utilities is faster.
Agreed and as I mentioned above using rysnc or ftp, it appears synolgy have a different name for rysnc but its all the same, this then does the copy nas to nas, where as right now its going nas>mac>nas
