Unitiqute2 Time Capsule wireless connection problem
Posted by: bercan on 26 February 2014
Dear all, I am new to Naim community. I recently bought a Naim Unitiqute 2, but was not able to connect it to time capsule (no problem while connecting it to other wireless device). i write wireless password, wait about 20 seconds, then it says not connected. I tried to change wireless settings of time caosule from g to n, etc. but it still does not accept the password. What would be the problem? thanks alot.
Hi Chris I too use a tiny Vigor 120v2 (which appears optimum for BT) and have not had a failure but only used it for 3 months.. But because of it's better ADSL2 performance than my previous Cisco modem, my line has finally been re profiled to be about 1Mbps quicker.. I have moved from 2.6 to 3.6Mbps effective download bandwidth with very few re syncs (perhaps every 8 to 10 days) .... I have a long line to the exchange.
Simon
Thanks Simon, I hope that you have better luck then I have had with the Draytek Vigor, it's such a neat package, I really do want it to work, and I couldn't find anything comparable as an alternative.
Chris
Dear all, I connected it to the time capsule via wire. no problem at all. wireless to other router: no problem at all.
wireless to time capsule: still not working. thanks all for your helps...
Bercan is you router or time capsule doing the dhcp server? You only want one doing it.
Garyi, I do not know what is dhcp server. But currently, my time capsule il connected to my wireless modem (router), wireless channels of both are open. uniti is connected to modem, some other devices (imac, macbook air) are connected to time capsule. in this way, i am able to use computers as music servers.
It might be the case that the wireless modem is utilizing a channel that overlaps your TimeCapsule.
or that the modem is doing routing instead of TC. very common mistake though

I strongly suspect that you have 2 networks now - one from the time capsule with one set of addresses, and one from the home router with another set. The two are independent and a device on one cannot see devices on the other.
The setup to prevent this from happening with this setup will in part require you to learn what 'dhcp' is. Google "set up time capsule as wireless bridge" and you'll find what you need to do.
I don't believe this is a DHCP addressing problem; the DHCP server on a Time Capsule handles all five interfaces (wlan0, wlan1, eth1, eth2, eth3) identically (i.e., there is no separate DHCP server instance for wireless clients on wlan0 or wlan1).
If you are a Mac (OS X) user, there is a handy app called WiFi Scanner (from AccessAgility on the Mac App Store) that can help to determine if you have overlapping networks, for example. I've been using this for a few years now, and it is great for setting a fixed Wi-Fi channel for your router(s) for either of the 2.4 or 5.6 GHz bands.
AccessAgility also develops an app called WiFi Survey that can map out signal strength at your location, using an iPad (and a daemon running on either a Mac or Windows machine via Ethernet).
Bercan hasn't described all of his connections, but I was guessing that he may have some hard-wired to his home router, and then trying to connect using wi fi to the Apple device.
If all of his devices are either hard-wired to the Apple device, or connected wirelessly to it, then he shouldn't have any dhcp / ip address related issues, I agree.
Yes, Bart. It is exactly the way as you described in your first paragraph. I therefore presume that there is no need for me study/learn what is dhcp...

The problem is that it just won't work the way I described it in the first paragraph.
My first recommendation is to connect to only one or the other -- the Time Capsule -or- the home router. You can mix wifi and wired, but not devices. A device connected to your home router will not be "seen" by any device connected to the Time Capsule most likely.
Just to check, when you attempt wireless connection do you disconnect ethernet cable at the back?

At the back of the UnitiQute, that is
:-) Yes i do. By the way I think uniti does not allow to make a wireless connection when there is an ethernet cable connected to it.
Allen, let us know how you get on. the TimeCapsule does seem to work well, and has a great performance. I have about 30 devices PAT/routing through the TC with no issues at all.
It also supports a seperate DHCP scope on the guest wireless SSID (only externally routed) if you wish. The other nice feature is that it allows you to set a seperate SSID for the 803.11ac on 5GHz only. This is great as it helps encourage 'ac' to use it's double size cells and not shrink down for backwards capability for other standards (b/g/n), which mean superb throuhput, and I can get upto 1Gbps on my Macbook Pro.
Finally it's ability to setup with other Airport Express devices as a Wifi repeater to create a strong wifi zone throughout your house/garden is superb, and one of the most reliable I have come across.
Simon
This can be found be holding down the option key while selecting the Radio Mode (at least on the older versions of the Airport Utility). On the older 802.11n Time Capsule I use here, I set the 5 GHz to n (or ac) as Simon notes above, and set the 2.4 GHz to b/g/n.
Allen, I went for the 2TB version as well, and even with two devices backing up to it as a TimeCapsule - it is not that full.
I back my audio media up seperately. For that I have a Netgear Duo that automatically powers up once a week and takes an incremental backup of my main NAS and then powers down again. Really rather neat - though I say it myself
Simon
Simon, I have a NV+ with all my music (HD, CDs and MP3) and back up to a Duo using something call chronosynch every week - I am interested in your automatic solution - if its not a big deal, can you let me know how you set up the Duo
Thanks
Jonathan (Uniti/Unitiqute+Nait5i)
ps: I have both NAS's on auto off and on.
Jonathan, no problem. I use FTP as the file transfer method as that seems the most reliable, transparent and straightforward for incremental backups for me.
I set the ReadyNas Duo to power on at 2am every Wednesday - in its timed power settings. I then set a backup script to start 15 minutes later in the ReadyNas Duo backup scheduler to perform an incremental backup of two of my media shares (music and photography) on my seperate master NAS.
The incremental backups usually take between 5 minutes to a couple of hours - it depends on how busy I have been with my photography or ripping.
Therefore I set the power off for 6 hours later in the power settings.
And that is that - reliable and effective - and I am not using up electricity unneccessarily.
BTW I power the master NAS, the associated ethernet switch and the backup NAS from a UPS. The Master NAS controls the UPS and uses the Ethernet to manage the backup NAS with regard to UPS status.
Therefore if I have a power outage - not that unusual though better than it used to be - then the backup will continue unless the UPS becomes exhausted (has about 60 mins) and then both master and backup NAS's will be powered down in a controlled state, if necessary interrupting the backup process, avoiding data corruption - all automatically.
(you can tell I have been burnt here before ... )

Thanks for your time. Ill have a go at the auto solution. I too have UPS on both NAS's, I also periodically do a backup to a 3TB HD that I then take to another location. While my NAS's are in different parts of the house - I have heard of people being robbed and losing everything... I also back up my important files (not media) to the cloud using something called carbonite - its about 50$ a year and offers unlimited space for files. But it doesn't allow backup from NAS or USB.
Cheers
