Yes - 'The Yes Album'

Posted by: J.N. on 28 February 2014

I note that a Steven Wilson remaster is scheduled for release on 14th April for the information of those of the 'Affirmative Bent'.

It will apparently come with a Blu-Ray thingy, a 47 channel surround sound remix, hand knitted willy warmer etc etc, as usual.

See if you can get an original pressing of the original album. Nuff said!

Thanks John. I'll probably get a copy but it's worth mentioning the MFSL CD's excellent. Be interested to hear what Mr Wilson's done with the surround sound mix.

I wasn't too impressed with his efforts on CTTE, but no doubt I'll end up buying this one too just to be sure! I think for most of the Yes originals I have found the Rhino remasters to be rather good (and at bargain price) but I do look forward to Steven Wilson's remix of Relayer which has always suffered from too dense a mix. Hopefully he'll be able to deliver something a little more transparent.

Interestingly, after his release of CTTE I did several ABA tests on the many versions I have and concluded that my original vinyl copy sounded best of all!

+1 - Only yesterday I saw a beautiful original pressing for less than a tenner.

Thank you John.

I was impressed with his rendering of CTTE, it's just not my preferred version for content. But flat transfer and needle drop are included so one way or another it's now my go to version.

I too have the original UK vinyl release of The Yes Album and I don't think it was ever equalled, let alone bettered until the MFSL CD.  I think the MFSL CD is more enjoyable to the 24Bit HDT release, my one issue with the CD is that I think the bass is pumped too much. This is one album where any bass emphasis is unnecessary. The 24Bit rendering is dryer, faster but just as sweaty and growling.

I'll certainly be getting the SW version. I don't think anyone has fully cracked it yet. Maybe this time? maybe not. It's something to look forward to. I wish someone would unscramble Relayer.

This lifted from Burning Shed on the BD version, a DVD version will also be available. Steve Wilson will be at the controls.  GFTO and TFTO are also rumoured to be in the pipeline:

The Yes Album is the second in a series of remixed and expanded Yes albums.

Presented in a mini vinyl replica gatefold card sleeve (with protective inner sleeves) with booklet featuring new sleeve notes by Sid Smith, along with rare photos and archive material, the album has been mixed for 5.1 Surround Sound from the original studio masters by Steven Wilson and is fully approved by Yes.

The CD features a new stereo album mix by Steven Wilson, the studio version of Clap and an extended version of A Venture.

The blu-ray features:

- 5.1 PCM Surround Sound and High Resolution Stereo mixes (24bit 96khz).
- the original album mix in a hi-res flat transfer from the original stereo master tape source (24bit/192khz).
- a complete alternate album running order drawn from live tracks, singles edits & an extended mix.
- exclusive instrumental versions of all new mixes in DTS-HD Master Audio stereo (24bit/96khz).
- exclusive needle-drop of an original UK vinyl A1/B1 pressing transferred in 24bit/96khz audio.

The ultimate way to enjoy the album that helped establish Yes's reputation as a creative force to be reckoned with.

Pre-order for April 14th release.

Steven Wilson is one of very few people currently driving a remastering desk, in whom I have any faith. I think he did a brilliant job with 'Aqualung', 'Thick as a Brick', 'Benefit', 'Warrior on the Edge of Time' and 'In the Land of Grey and Pink'.

I have original and MFSL CD's of 'The Yes Album', so a comparison will be interesting. SW seems to have the rare skill of cleaning up these tape multi-track recordings whilst having the good sense to leave the tape hiss in, because it's part of the sound signature of the original analogue article.

He has said as much in interviews.

Yes, but he doesn't simply remaster. He remixes and that's what I find difficult to accept. I found some of the changes to CTTE rather alarming. That said, I do look forward to a remix of 'The Gates of Delerium' from 'Relayer' which has always sounded too congested to these ears.
