Enough was enough - Error 36 again & again

Posted by: rjstaines on 02 March 2014

Been holding out on applying the fix for Error 36 on my NDS, but yesterday was just too much !

First error 36 after swicthing NDS inputs... power down for ONE hour... power up... error 36 still there !  Power down for TWO hours... now OK.

A couple of hours later, after switching NDS inputs again... error 36

Two times in one day with wait times of upwards of an hour (never mind the 30 miuntes any more) was enough to pursuade me the time had come to apply the fix and let the devil take the loss of SQ, if there was to be one.

So, with the display taunting me with its "Error 36", out came the laptop and on went the revised 3.22 firmware.  I had done the DSP file replacement a few months ago in readiness, but had never reached this level of exasperation before yesterday.

And the result...?

If there is a degradation in SQ, I haven't heard it.  I've played my list of 'test' tracks - the ones I know well, in fact the ones which convinced me that TWO 555PS are a discernable improvement over one driving the NDS.    ...and what's more, (so far,) I can swap between inputs* on my NDS.

Happy days !!

*   I use the NDS DAC with my CD transport, so swap between CD and UPnP inputs

I had this error when they just installed my new NDS some time ago. I got an immediate replacement - but it immediately made me question if my road into streaming was a right choice. Since then only one small problem with the NDS searching for connection - while able to play. Turned off the 555PS DR, and fixed.... But this kind of stuff kept me away from streaming for some while.

I applied the fix a few month ago. It cured the error. I do not think it has a major impact sound wise. I thus recommend it. Nevertheless, I do not understand why Naim does not provide it with the new units.
