Neil Young releases The Ditch Trilogy + Zuma

Posted by: FangfossFlyer on 03 March 2014

Just heard that Neil Young is to release the long await Ditch Trilogy + Zuma in an all analogue vinyl box set on Record Store Day.

Even though I have the original release, which are my most prized LPs, I am really looking forward to this release as it contains some of my favourite albums from Neil and his previous release of his first 4 albums were of excellent quality.

This limited edition box set includes the classic albums: Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night and Zuma, each remastered from the original analog studio recordings at Bernie Grundman Mastering. The artwork is a historically accurate reproduction by Young's long-time art director, Gary Burden. These classics are being reissued on 180-gram audiophile vinyl for the first time and pressed at the world's premiere pressing plant, Pallas MFG Germany.

And for those that do not know Neil's three consecutive early 1970's albums “Time Fades Away”, “On The Beach” and “Tonight’s The Night” are considered by many fans as the Rosetta Stone to understanding his entire body of work. Because of their dark, haunting brilliance, the albums are known as "The Ditch Trilogy".

In the often quoted hand written liner notes of Decade Neil writes: " 'Heart of Gold' put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch." Hence, the origin of the "Ditch" term -- which is sometimes also referred to as the "Doom" period or "The Wilderness Years".

The impetus for the heart of darkness spiral can be traced back to Harvest’s “The Needle and The Damage Done", Young's legendary anti-drug plea based on the heroin trouble's of Crazy Horse guitarist Danny Whitten.

Time Fades Away -- currently only available on used vinyl -- will be re-released -- again on vinyl and will continue to remain only available on vinyl which is fantastic as there has been a petition to Neil to re-release Time Fades Away for fives year now!

Richard

p.s. Neil and Crazy Horse have a gig in Liverpool this year!

And if anyone sees the set on line for sales...please post here...thanks!

Great news Richard. There's a lot of great stuff being released on RSD this year...

Thanks Richard. I'll see how much the box set is before ordering as I already have them. My copy of Zuma and On The Beach are not very good pressings though.

Thanks for the heads-up Richard.

I have the US 1st pressings of those albums, which were all bought sealed (and cost a fortune), so there's a part of me feeling a little disappointed when I hear news like this. I will have to buy the set and no doubt struggle to find where to put all these lps.

Nice post FF! Thanks for the news.

Zuma in particular is one that I've been hoping to stumble across a clean pressing. Just don't see it in my haunts, and I read mixed reviews of the recent (2008?) German pressing that's widely available. Maybe this release will do the trick.

Glad to hear it's AAA though I have to wonder what kind of shape 40 year old tapes are in. There again, an original pressing would be superior. Neil seems to have the highest standards as you say, though always at a premium cost to the consumer. I expect this one will be no different.

Does record store day mean no presales? Get up early or wait in line? Or go day after .

Well he had announced dates for Canada and the US which currently takes him up to 2nd April and he only has another 9 dates currently listed with no venue at the moment so it maybe later in the year before he hits the UK.

Also Young has said that he will never release TFA original as he hates it but he has a TFA II which is going to be part of the archives series as he switched drummers during the tour and did different songs. The original album was poorly recorded on to a digital soundboard which Briggs warned him against.

But if this does happen as Neil can be a bit finickity then great news indeed.

Personally I will stick with the Promo HDCD I got from Warner Bros.

I have all these albums on original uk pressings already Beach & TFA are a little crackly so may consider the box set. The highpoint of Neil's career IMO.

Allegedly it is supposed to be limited to 3500 copies so if that is the case you had better get in quick.

FYI - checked at the local record shop today and they have no info regarding cost for the NY set. They also have no idea how many copies their chain (3 shops in Seattle area) will get. Guess I might be getting in line on RSD.

Just heard that Neil is delaying it all...

"Neil Young and Warner Bros. Records have announced that they must delay the release of Young's upcoming Neil Young Official Series 2 Vinyl Box Set, which was intended to come out on Record Store Day, due to several other projects that Young has in the works that he wishes to focus on. A November release date for the set, which includes the classic albums Time Fades Away, On The Beach, Tonight's The Night and Zuma, will be announced soon."
