Argerich's Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.3

Posted by: thebigfredc on 07 March 2014

Afternoon

I have this piece of music by three other people, all of them men, and have to say her interpretation is so different.

She seems to play the notes more quickly, less spaced and more softly than either Ashkanazy or  Andsnes. Could it be attributed to the way the different sexes play the piano, transpose music or is it just her unique style?

I don't know myself but would like to be enlightened by better informed members of the forum.

It's everything to do with Argerich being herself - a very fine musician.

Just listen to what she does to the end of Chopin's 2nd piano sonata....

Or her Preludes Op.28.

this Preludes have a certain dare devil chip on her shoulder attitude. She does not give much space between each tune so it appears as tho a long Fantasy piece. The most memorable ending with a strong series of low D hammering resembling nailing of a coffin signaling coming back to the reality.

She is one of the great ( and still going strong ) interpreter.
