NDS arrived , a new install

Posted by: Dan43 on 07 March 2014

New NDS with SN2 and 555PSDR has arrived today and currently being run in. System is being served by a UnitiServe and with Ovator S400 with NACA5 cabling. Also Power-Line and Hi-Line cables installed on a new Fraim. Looks gorgeous.

Music wise it is a little flat new out of the box, like a huge weight is resting on top of the music and the run-in will take a while to release things somewhat, so it will be interesting to see how long it all takes to get to where the demo system was.

A huge thankyou to Ian and Norman at UHES for the installation today and the banter, Norman really does have a great encyclopedia of knowledge for someone like me to tap into.

Updates as I grow into the system and it shows its true potential.

Best,

Dan M. Cotswolds.

Congrats Dan!  The NDS/555PS DR is a world class source. I hope you'll enjoy it for many years to come. Mine sounded great from day one, but yes, it did take a couple of weeks to sound its best. Others say it takes longer. IMO, it's best not to worry about it too much, and just enjoy the music.

Congratulations!  You're in for a very special journey with this fantastic combination.  Be prepared for great sounding music, especially as the system beds in and frees up.

Welcome to the NDS club - a great source, congratulations. Might take some time before you are fully happy - depending also much on the 555PS.

Thanks, if it performs like the demo system it will be tremendous. The Ovators really like this set up also, just waiting for the time it all opens up more.

Running music all night and during the day to see where we are come Monday to take the first baby steps then perhaps a few weeks to really bed in.

Congratulations and best wishes with it. It will only get better and I doubt it will take long for you to be enjoying the benefits. Mine went well straight out of the box. Maybe your system shut down for the installation is a factor in the flatness? Makes no difference. You'll be flying soon enough.

Been running it all day and night with volume low when not actually listening to it properly to keep running it all in.

Everything is new, NACA5 to NDS, it is still very flat, no joie de vivre as yet, waiting for everything to release, still has the handbrake on.

Hopefully by the end of this week she has broken in and will open up. The Ovators sound so lifeless at the moment and not everything is joined up, haven't got to the same place the demo system was at, but it will get there :-)

Still playing.

I have all the drive, I have more layers to the music, but still little pizzaz/release. Still feels like it has a slight footbrake on, and the high frequency response is still to kick in properly.

Just waiting for all to join up. Like you say AllenB it could be a little while.

One thing not applying as much volume to compensate so things are coming in nicely that way.

The 555PS will take a lot of running in and I expect this is where most of the performance will come from at the front end. Our NDS went in with a three year old 555PS and sounded good from the off. We later had it upgraded to DR and added a second new one. Brilliantly though this performed, after a few months things got really good, the music seemingly developing more life and realism.

Ours was great from day one and improved over time. We also already had a well run in 555 so I agree with Harry that the PS is probably the issue here.

Quite a few people have reported that the Ovators take ages to run in an reveal their abilities. I've found that speakers take a lot longer than electronics to run in. Give it a few weeks and it will sound much better. Leaving the radio playing all day has always seemed to work well.

Congratulations on the purchase of your new system Dan. Sit back and enjoy because your system should start to come on song by the end of this week ^_^

Without wanting to hijack this thread Dan, I am patiently waiting for my nds to arrive within the next few days. I will run it with an xps2dr, which is currently sitting in my rack, unplugged, and looking distinctly forlorn. Can anyone advise whether it is safe to power it up without connecting, so that it has a chance to warm through before I connect the nds?

Posted on: 12 March 2014 by hungryhalibut

Yes, it's quite safe, but turn it off before connecting the NDS!

And I don't think it'll help much...

Posted on: 12 March 2014 by Harry

As above. It can run happily on its own and warming it through may help.

Why ?

New player, new PS and new speakers (I think from reading the thread they they are new too). . . if the system is exhibiting signs of sounding "new," it could be any combination or permutation of the three.

Congratulations Dan ... welcome to the Cotswold Audiophile Group (that's unofficial).

I agree Norman and Ian at UHES do a great job.

I had my NDS and 555PSDR installed from them in November - I leave it streaming random music 24/7.  It is starting to sound fantastic but still lacks a little of the wow factor and I'm not listening to it as much as I would like.

Hope yours settles down soon ...

(The rest of the system is QNAP NAS, old 52 and active SBLs driven by 4 x 135s -  I suspect it shows my age.)

Its coming, but I think all the new elements to the build it will take a while to really start singing, pleased I had the well run-in demo to compare so I know where we should end up.

Ovators are two months older than NDS but my feeling is they are still running in. New NACA5, HiLine, PowerLine, NDS, SN2, 555PSDR, it is a lot to run-in, but a good journey to note for reference.

Playing music 24/7 pretty much. h

Had the first 'hum' from the 555PS which got me looking at the forum, so can see others have had this too.

The music is presenting more layers and is getting more fluid, but that sparkle is still  waiting.
