Duplicates

Posted by: Granthar on 07 March 2014

Going through my tracks and some are repeated up to 10 times because of original albums and compilations.

is there any software that allows you to have one copy but so the integrity of albums remains, a bit like stubbing in file de duplication so you only need one copy but it thinks there are still multiples So a file can have multiple tags with different album details.

not sure I have explained what I mean

Try a program called Total Commander. It will find duplicate files and allow you to delete them. However this is a tricky problem because different files can have the same track name and the same tracks can have different file names. Be careful.

Oh, didn't really explain myself.

I don't want to just delete duplicates as that would leave albums with missing tracks, google file stubbing and de-duplication you will see what I mean, it's where software still thinks a file exists in one location but actually it's being pointed to a different location.

I don't think its possible because of the file tags because you can only have one album name in an tag.

In many cases for me, the tracks are not the same.  I have several versions of many albums on my server, but they are not the same -- different mastering versions, etc.  The Beatles. . . original cd releases, 2009 remasters, mono box set, etc etc etc.  Which is the one track you'd keep?

I have too many versions of some albums; I've not focused on the tracks per se.

The only way I can see is to create a playlist for each album, so you can include the same track in several albums,,,, way too much work though..

With disk space being so cheap, it's probably better to keep duplicates, and as said earlier, quite often, the same track on different compilations are mixed differently.
