n-Serve for NDS
Posted by: Stephen Pritchard on 12 March 2014
Is there any news on desk top client for 'Qutes and NDS similar to Linn's Kinsky?
I am getting frustrated with my iPhone and iPad just hanging - i.e. not getting connected to the server. I think this is a wireless connection problem.
I have a wired internet system, my 'Qute and NDS were set up with permanent addresses and my router is an old BT model (version 2?) with a network switch attached.
Thanks for any thoughts ...
Sounds like issue is with your network. I don't have any issues with iThings hanging.
I suspect your BT router is the culprit. Lots of recommendations on the forum for reliable routers - I use an Airport Extreme.
I thought as much ...
I live in an old cotswold cottage with thick walls so I have three routers: 1 BT with the telephone bits, an old airport extreme in my study, which covers most of the ground floor, and a new airport extreme between the bedrooms that does the first floor and the attic.
I suspect will need another airport extreme, put the old one next door to the BT beast, and the new one either in the study or the kitchen (the latter is a central coalition downstairs).
Thanks for your recommendation to search for recommendations for reliable routers.
Is wifi turned OFF on the BT router?
It should be -- just use the Apple devices for wifi. Add a third if need be.
But there is a difference between a weak / nonexistent wifi signal causing problems, and other network setup issues that can cause problems. You may be experiencing one or the other or some of both.
Thanks for your suggestions Bart - they make sense.
Not sure how to turn off the wifi on my BT home hub 2 and I have researching alternatives. But no one can tell me if the new BT Openreach modems work on normal phone lines so that I can plug in a decent router. I suspect I'll have to wait until we get to our fibre system sometime next year!
You'll likely be MUCH happier with fibre. We've had it here for many years now.
The way to control the wifi in the home router is to log into it with a web browser. You should be able to Google up the instructions for your particular router model. You usually get to it by going to the address 192.168.1.1 It will ask for a login name and password, which are probably the defaults for that particular model -- often the name is admin and the password is either admin, password, or there is no password. Somewhere in the menu of options, and submenues, you can turn off wifi. But be careful and don't play with settings you're unsure of! A simple 'turn wifi on/off' box would be ok though; it may be as simple as that.
Thanks Bart

The only way to turn off the wifi on Home Hub 2 is to use the power saving setting. Its not possible to turn off for 24 hrs but can do it for 23.5 hrs of the day.
I hope that this improves things ...
I switched to a Netgear router/modem (for the Broadband in connection) and experienced zero dropouts, ditch the BT HH2 they are pretty bad, I got about 5-6 broadband/wifi hang-ups a day and it had to be re-booted many many times, the Netgear 6300 nothing in 4 months.
Worth it for about £120.00, very stable.
