Storing HD downloads

Posted by: David O'Higgins on 13 March 2014

I have been buying HD downloads and also ripping Blu Ray audio discs. I download/rip to my PC and then transfer them to USB keys, which I then connect to my Unitiserve for playback. But this is a limited solution, given the capacity of USB keys. I guess I need to store my HD material on a NAS, but what is the best way to transfer the files to the NAS?

There are lots of ways of doing it. I'm not sure "best" comes into it.

I download to my PC HDD, which is continuously backed up onto a USB drive, so I have two copies by default. I then copy to a NAS network share which is mirrored. This won't save me if the box fails and takes the discs with it, but mirroring is a mostly reliable way of keeping a NAS running without disaster.Well, sensible insurance at any rate.

Whenever I put a new file or files onto the NAS I back it up onto an external USB drive which lives off site. I also burn onto DVD and store these.

Taking a USB stick over to the streamer is effective and I have been known to do it. My main obsession is having sturdy back ups.

Thanks Harry. How do you copy to the NAS Network Share?

I have the shares included in my file manager so I just copy and paste, as I would between folders on a HDD, or between two HDDs in my PC.

In file manager (or Windows Explorer or My Computer - whichever you prefer to call it) right click and select Add Network Location. Then browse to the share, name it and OK it. You will then see the share along side your HDD(s) and any other storage devices you have attached to the PC.

David, with a nas and a computer on the same home network, downloading the files onto the computer, and then transferring them to the nas, is very very simple.

If you have a uServe ssd, and want to download hi res music, you really want to put them on a nas.
