Best Server
Posted by: Eric Shipman on 16 March 2014
Hi I am new to streaming. I wondered what is the best server to use I have heard of Twonky can anyone help please to get the best out of my Nd5 xs & a Qnap ts-210 Am not great with computers but get by ok. I am 67 so any help please. I would be grateful. Thanks Eric .
Hi Eric
i also have an ND5XS and it produces beautiful music.
i use synology for my nas so can't help with qnap but understand the qnap is good.
Others will help regarding your nas but one of the most important things is the ripping of CDs and the metadata attached. I advise to only rip a few albums 1st to make sure everything displays correctly in Nstream. Get the album artwork displaying correctly also.
once you are happy with everything, you can rip the remainig CDs.
There is lots of useful information on this forum so please use the search engine also.
good luck with it
Anton
In terms of value for money with very good quality sound Vortexbox is hard to beat. You can build yourself a simple server in an afternoon or requisition an old PC and be up and running in an hour. If you add Bliss for file and cover art management you have a server you can administer from your iPhone. I've been beating the drum for Vortexbox in these forums for several years now and a surprising number of Naimites now use one.
I'm now using my VB server with a Dac V1 as well via USB and MPad - works a treat.

Hi Eric
I have a ND5 XS, and a Qnap TS112. It has Twonky built in. Most people, including me, call it 'Wonky Twonky', and is a nightmare for various reasons. As soon as funds permit, I will change it! 'Asset' gets top marks from most people, and is available for Qnap as a beta version. So in a few months, it will hopefully become fully available.
I'm 61, so not too far behind you!

I use a WD MyBook Live with 'Twonky' and never had any problems either when I had the HDX or now ripping with DB Poweramp on the PC.

I use Minimserver and it's excellent. Transcode FLAC>WAV24 on the Synology NAS.
any PC running JRiver Media Center.
Hello Thanks guys you all have been very helpful. This is a great site for help . Have a nice day to all. Regards Eric
Eric, may be a bit late to this thread. However, it occurred to me that if your preference is not to use computers, then the Naim Untiserve or one of their other NS range servers may be an option you pursue (I.e demo).

+1 for the UnitiServe, I did a comparison a few days back with a LaCie nas, and pointed asset on both a laptop and Raspberry PI. Also directed a US at the same files.
For me this was the order of preference for sound.
1. UnitiServe
2. Raspberry Pi
3. Laptop
You wouldn't think there would be a huge difference but wow the Serve was light years ahead!
If you need just a server, Assetnas from DBpoweramp is very good. If you need also a player then use a PC with Jriver connected to a good DAC through either a USB cable or a USB to Spidf converter.
I'd like to give a +1 to the Sonology approach. It is simply bulletproof and you have some built-in data redundancy if you implement the RAID function. Hard to beat.
Thank you to all for the helpful hints . I have taken it all on board. Nice get help from all of you Thanks Eric,
