Squeezebox Touch - ND5 XS

Posted by: Bluetorric on 20 March 2014

Hello,

I am considering the above as a bit of an upgrade and also because the SBT is becoming a bit temperamental of late.

I have the SBT plugged optically out into my Supernait with the FLAC files stored and controlled from my mac, and then to a pair Spendor SA1s.

Now the sound of the SBT is quite good, considering the cost and would probably would not a night and day improvement switching to the the ND5 XS.

What I was wondering if I went ahead with this idea, seeing as the Supernait and  ND5 XS have internal DACs which one would be best to use, optically out or analogue out into the Supernait.

I think I need to make up my mind pretty quickly as I'm told the prices are due to rise soon, so any of your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.......

Thanks in advance.

Bluetorric - I have experienced the exact same thing as you with my SBT coming from cold off - not every time, but occasionally.  I have an upgraded PS and it makes no difference in that regard.

Thanks for that,

I thought I was going nuts, as I say more of a niggle than a fault, but annoying  none the less.......

I'm beginning to think I have made an expensive mistake in buying the ND5 XS.

I can't seem to get it to play music from my macbook, I have downloaded the j river media player wich plays ok on the macbook, but can't get to play on the Naim.

I can get it to play from the LMS to the ND5 XS in a limited way, but have to use the remote to change or add tracks.

So does this mean I have to purchase an Ipod or iphone to get pics and track info, any help would assist me greatly.

I'm on the verge of sending it back and re-installing the SBT.......

I have never gotten LMS on my Mac Mini to work at all with my NDX, but I am evidently missing a detail.  MinimServer does work very well.

Album art always seems to take a bit of work on any of these systems, but that is the fault of the file formats, not the streamers -- Naim is no worse than the others, including Logitech, in my experience.  It takes a bit of housekeeping is all, same as it does with any of the players.  For me, art is working best in iTunes, which seems to work fairly well with LMS.  The Apple method is somehow different from the standard, so platforms unwilling to adopt the Apple standard expect the art to be added as a tag to each song, rather than being dropped in a folder, or something analogous to this.  There are tools, I am told, that make this work easy.   I have not gotten to it yet.

Have you got system automation working yet?  To me, that is what makes working out the kinks worthwhile.

Stick with it.  I don't think you will regret your purchase.  Selling the SBT you might regret, though.  Plug it into the ND5XS and use it for Spotify Premium, or other whims that may come along.  SBT is a super-flexible, high-quality source, especially into a good DAC.

Whether or not you return the ND, let us know how you think its DAC compares to that of your SN1.  Playing your SBT through it would be a good way to know.

Best of luck.

Nick

Does your ND5XS appear in the LH pane of JRiver underneath Player in the playing now section? If not you may not have set up JRiver to use Media Network to share your music library. You can do this via the Tools/Options/Media Network menu.

Have you set up and configured a DLNA server in JRiver to enable you to stream your music files? This is also in the same menu.

Many thanks for your replies,

Nick, the DAC in the ND seems to have the edge, but I wouldn't say it was night and day as the DAC in the SN I thought was pretty good.

As I am playing analogue into the SNs power amp, I am unsure what to choose in the set up menu system automation as power amp is not mentioned.

SJ, the ND was not appearing in the left hand section, but when I restarted the mac it is now there and seems working OK......

Thanks for the help guys.......

Although you will be connecting to an analog input rather than a digital input on the SN1 you should still be connecting to its preamp section but bypassing the SN1's DAC as I assume you can do with any other analog source.

We can all blame iDevice auto correction for our errors now (as you no doubt know from a previously deleted post)!

Without an iDevice, system automation is limited to changing the SN1 to the correct input automatically, whatever you set it to be, anytime you use the ND.  Add an iDevice and you can control the SN volume, and select other sources on it, as it applies in your case.  It even lets you control a Naim CD player, if you add one.

It is possible/likely that system automation allows the ND remote to interact better with the SN; I do not know, as I use iPad and iPhone instead of the ND remote.

You have to add a cheap additional cable from the ND to the SN to make what I described possible.

I've got an ND5 and the SN2 set up with system automation enabled in the ND5 for Preamp and can control the SN2's volume from the ND5's remote.

Yes, I can control the volume and mute on my SN1 from the ND5s remote already without adjusting the system automation.

SJ, On the jriver media server, I have to keep re- activating the streamer in DLNA every time I go back into it, is there anyway of locking it in?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "re-activating the streamer in DLNA". I have JRiver Media Centre installed on my PC rather than a macbook or laptop and it is connected via ethernet to my network and NDS. The JMC also has a Media Server application which runs in the background.

How are you playing your music files on the ND5? Are you controlling it all from your macbook i.e. "pushing" the files to the ND5?

Have you set up and configured one or more DLNA server(s) in the Tools/Options/Media Network menu?

JRiver is very flexible in terms of allowing you to transcode your files and how you want your different browser views to show on an i-device but it can take a little time to get it right. Once you do it really is worthwhile.

You might find it useful to check out JRiver's Interact support forum.

Thanks guys, that seems to be working OK now.

Another problem I have encountered is that I decided to install n-Serve on my Macbook and it does not seem to scan my music files at all, it  just stays empty, I'm obviously doing something wrong, any idea's...........

Posted on: 09 April 2014 by sjbabbey

Hi Bluetorric

n-serve is for Naim servers e.g. Unitiserve. you should use n-stream to control the ND5XS.

I don't know whether you've already done so but you can associate your ND5 with your DLNA server in JRiver by right clicking on the ND5 in the players list.

Thanks for the info SJ, I will try both.......

Posted on: 11 April 2014 by Bluetorric

Just a quick update,

jriver is working OK now from my mac ( apart from the occasional freeze which is annoying ) still on the 30 day trial so I will probably keep it if it behaves, the UI is excellent.

Purchased a ipod touch off the bay and installed n-stream which I use for radio and to play my FLAC music files from a WD my passport HDD plugged into the ND5, which is also excellent as I can now play my music with the mac closed down.

So thanks  for your help guys.........

Glad to hear that you're enjoying your new ND5 system.

However, I'd be wary of using a HDD attached to the ND5's USB port as it's really only designed for portable playback devices e.g. the ipod. The ND5 is first and foremost a network streamer so really you should be looking to use it with a network drive e.g. a NAS drive or something like a WD MyBook Live.

If you decide to keep JRiver then you might want to consider purchasing their JRemote app for the ipod.

+ 1 regarding HDD, use a NAS and stream via ethernet on NAIM's recommendation. It will probably also sound better.

Jason.

Thanks for the heads up about the HDD, although I must admit it sounds fine.

Not so sure about the NAS though, think I might stick with my Macbook pro for the time being as its silent to all intents and purpose, I don't know if I want another device in my room which may be noisy.

I have the jriver app on my android phone, its called Gizmo and its very good.......

Can you not connect your WD MyPassport HDD to the macbook?

If you can it would make transfering/adding new files etc. a lot easier.

You could then connect the macbook to the ND5 either via an ethernet cable or wirelessly.

Posted on: 11 April 2014 by Bluetorric

Yes this is how I'm playing them now with  the FLAC music files are stored on the macbook pro with a duplicate set stored on the HDD.

The HDD saves having the macbook fired up and playing directly, so not really a problem more of a convenience. I will just stick to playing from the macbook.....
