AV2 Problem

Posted by: GeraldUK on 24 March 2014

My AV2 has just been set up after the move to Hong Kong and whilst working great for TV and 5.1 from iTunes not so on blu ray. For BR i am using the versatile outputs via the rear Av2 outputs to connect direct to the rear of the player. All channels work fine bar the centre - checked av2 and both v1 and v2 are set for the channel I'm using on the av2.   Odd as it worked prior to the move.  New blu ray player arriving anyway tomorrow so can see if thats the issue. The 2 din leads to the rear of the BR player have been tested so they aren't at fault. Also tested the output volume for the front and even ramping it up makes no difference .  Any ideas ? rather frustrating ! Obviously checked the connections and tried swapping them round too with no luck

There is analogue 5.1 in to take 5.1 output from players like Tonym describes.

The surround is done internally by the player, then passed on through to the inputs of the AV2. It's the only way to get True HD audio from a Blu-Ray into a system that doesn't use HDMI like the AV2.

That's how I have my Denon 3800 Blu-ray player set up for watching Blu-rays but there's also a digital coaxial there if I want the AV2 to decode non HD formats from a standard DVD.

Same here Gerald.

I can't see anything in the instructions re the V1 & V2 inputs that should be causing any problems & you've ruled out the analogue leads being the problem. Bit of a head scratch this one...

I know . My man at infidelity is sorting me out .
There is a way of bypassing and removing the av2 altogether . Switching the oppo 103d for 105d to get the upgraded audio as only had matter of days . Sure Mike will post on here he's much more experienced and said he'd 2 installs last week switching in the oppo 105d and av2 out altogether

Does the AV2 have six simultaneous pass throughs for your 6 individual channels of decoded audio then?

I could understand true HD stereo but am not getting on the back of the AV2 how it can accept 6 channels for pass though at once*

* I am not denying it, I am just interested now?

Gary

Yes it does 8 actually, via 2 x 5 pin analogue inputs, one for Main L&R and Surround L & R, the second for Centre, Sub and ES L & R so 7.1 if required as well as 5.1. When operated in combined mode they are routed direct to the volume output  control, bypassing the internal decoding of the AV2. I was very pleased to find that it had this facility when, HD audio became available.

I still can't work out why the centre / sub not working. The inputs are both dialled into vs1 and vs2 on the AV2 , swapped both leads around and the vs2 channel just isn't working for some reason.

The replacement of the 103d arrived tonight and even over optical the sounds is excellent. Picture great but will still have a play with the darbee settings on the 105d to see if can get any other improvement .  i knew the picture would be good but the audio is superb. Looking forward to getting the necessary leads ordered now to output the HD audio correctly for maximum effect!  Oppo has been a really nice surprise. Beautifully packaged , instructions great , build quality excellent and visually and audibly a big upgrade on what was an old pioneer blu ray. Multi region blu ray mod nice to have too .

Gerald,

When you scroll through set-up routines for inputs, does VI2 show, it shouldn't if VI1 is configured for 6 channel or 8 channel  operation. Might be worth a check.

im not able to access av2 right now but think when last looked could see both vi1 and vi2 configured on same input

Possibly the problem, make sure that VI1 is set to 6 channel, otherwise the two inputs are not combined.

HI Gerry - thanks for posting - how do i do that?

Download the manual from the main Naim website Gerald, that explains all. It did occur to me that, if there really is a problem with the Centre channel input/output on the AV2 (rather than a configuration issue), and you're using 5.1, you could use one of the spare inputs and use this for the centre channel. You'd need to reroute the output lead of course, but it should work.

Glad you like the Oppo. I've still got my trusty old BD83SE, which is great. Excellent support from Oppo too.

As Tony notes the manual details the set-up in full in section 9.1. As an overview, on the front panel of the AV2 press and hold the input button. You should see Vi1 6CH if the AV2 is correctly configured. If it does not turn the rotary dial until it displays that configuration Then press and hold the input button again, to turn off the set-up mode.

Well I have learned something new, sorry for confusing everyone!

Thanks Gerry / tony I messed around and found the right setting finally we are back in action. Going to look into mike at infidelity suggestion re bypassing all together with the 105s apparently superior sound and will report back . Naims installer had all the wrong settings dialled in ? Truly useless !

Gerald

If you check your email you'll find that earlier today I sent you a link to the pages in the manual as also referred to by Gerry and Tony's posts.

Hope this helps

I've still got one of those too Max!

A great machine, it'll play any disk, even ones that other machines won't touch. Don't use it nowadays but worth hanging on to.

HI Gerald....

Glad to see it's working. Unfortunately our posts, being trade, have a delay as they need to be approved. So what you see above as an hour ago was early yesterday!

However... now you've got a great player and a functional system. Once I've got your other info re the setup, I can mail you an Oppo config file that you can "restore" those settings into the 105D to get the best of it.

All the best

Just watched 'Gravity' in 3d - what a superb movie. My father in law had never seen 3d and was knocked for six ! Really has reignited my interest in movies with the new player

I picked up an Oppo 105 at Christmas and love it. Use it primarily for Bluray watching but it also comes in handy when I have the irrational urge to spin a CD (I primarily stream via Superuniti).

I have it feeding my SU both via digital out, and via the 2 channel analog out. It is surprising how good the DAC on the Oppo unit is as the analog out sounds very good indeed.

Not sure what the various settings comments in this thread are related to, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to tweak things to make the unit sing either visually or audio wise in a 2 channel Naim set up, I'd love to hear.

That's great news Gerald!

Having got the sound working i had an extremely annoying humm over the front speakers . The oppo wasn't properly grounded and so was looping back and giving me an electrical humm on the fronts audible enough that even the mother in law asked what it was.  I must comment that Mike from Infidelity was unbelievably helpful taking a considerable amount of time to narrow it down to the mains (i didn't even have the player from him but have bought other bits in store)  - daisy chaining 2 extension leads  from fraim stack is all i got till i find an electrician to install another wall plug but no humm now! Back in the UK i had a bank of MK sockets on the wall for fraim and under tv for separate amps but on the move back to Hong Kong I'm having to make do with extensions leads - not ideal but its not my flat and dedicated ring main not possible ! Anyway , anyone with AV  issues i can't recommend Mike enough. Rare to get good service nowadays thanks a lot Mike .
Im lucky to have had James at Tom Tom as well. Keep up the good work guys !!
