NAIM UNITI2 and ALAC file format
Posted by: Flipmode77 on 26 March 2014
Hi everybody !
I'm a French new owner of NAIM UNITI2 amplifier and I'm surprised because this last cannot read encoded
ALAC files (24 bits - 96 Khz and 24 bits - 48 Khz) : is it normal ?
Is it possible to update some software ? How to do that ?
Thanks in advance !

Hi,
We support native ALAC playback up to 24bit/96kHz on the Uniti2 - how are you playing the files? Is it from a USB stick or via UPnP? Are you getting any kind of error message on the Uniti2 when you try to play them?
If it is via UPnP can you try popping some / all of the files onto a USB stick and put that into the Uniti2 directly and see if they will play from the USB stick? If they do then there is a problem with your UPnP server - in which case, what are you using as your UPnP server?
Thanks
Phil
Welcome to the forum Flipmode77.
As Phil says, there should be no problem with ALAC files.
If you get one of those files and put it on a USB stick, then try to play the file from that and it works, then you know that the server is most likely converting the file into something other than ALAC before it sends the stream to the Uniti2.
Admin, should this be in Streaming Audio?

Frank.

Thanks for your replies.
I am playing files via UPnP (they are encoded on my FREEBOX SERVER).
I will use a USB stick tonight to test.
I have to say that I had a power outage last night and this morning I got an error message relating to the upnp server. I have restarted the server (by pressing the LIST button as requested by the amp) and found my 2 network drives (my NAS and hard disk of the FREEBOX on which the ALAC files are stored)
.
Nevertheless, the amp cannot read and indicates that the format is not supported.
Unless the ALACs themselves have something odd about them then they should play from a USB stick - if they do then the issue is with the UPnP server itself and if they don't then can we have a couple of files to take a look at here via dropbox or similar?
Cheers
Phil
I am very worried about this problem....
How can I be sure to have the last version of the NAIM UNITI2 software ? How can I update it ?
I use a UPnP server which is the hard disk of my internet box.
Could the power outage damage my amp ?

I wouldn't worry given that you have a couple of simple tests to do to determine what the actual issue is...
How can I be sure to have the last version of the NAIM UNITI2 software ? How can I update it ?
You can check the firmware version of your Uniti2 in the "Tools" -> "Factory Settings" -> "System Status" menu under "Version" ... the current version of software is 3.22 but even if your Uniti2 is on earlier software then it would still support ALAC playback as that has always been a facility that the UNiti2 offered.
I use a UPnP server which is the hard disk of my internet box.
OK ... Again, if you carry out the simple checks that we've already discussed once you get home then it will help to diagnose the issue and move us on...
Could the power outage damage my amp ?
It is highly unlikely that a power outage would cleanly remove the ability of the unit to play ALAC files however as per our previous discussion above a few simple tests will help identify the problem ... there is no need to get worried.

Ok thanks Phil.
I will check that tonight.
But I am just wondering which kind of problem could affect my UPnP server if thoses files are read on a USB stick...
The amplifier clearly displays an error message. Something like "unable to read file due to its format".
Have you been able to play these files through your UPnP server previously?
Perhaps the UPnP server itself is trying to transcode them into a different format?
Are you using an iPhone / iPad for control? If so then sometimes the UPnP server can get itself into a mess and think it's trying to stream to the iPhone/iPad when it isn't. (If you want to check this then try controlling the Uniti2 from the IR remote and front panel display and see if you get the same issue.)
There are many possibilities for what could be wrong - let's start to work the problem rather than getting too worried about every possibility.
Cheers
Phil
I never tried to play these files previously because I downloaded them on QOBUZ website yesterday.
I used the amp front panel display with the front panel keyboard.
OK - so please lets work the issue through as discussed then...
Phil
Ok everybody : I have the solution !!
I just moved my ALAC files from my internet box server (FREEBOX) to my NAS and they are perfectly read !!
I suppose that my internet box server tried to transform the format...
I would like to thank each member and more specificaly PHIL
