NDX and DAC V1
Posted by: P.Bonte on 29 March 2014
Hi,
I am testing a NDX in my system and it I like it a lot.
Since I own a DAC V1 connected to Mac minI via USB , this question :
Would it be a good idea to make a second connection ( next to din NDX to 282 ) NDX dig out to DAC V1 to use the headphone part of the DAC V1 ?
Phiippe
If you get the NDX, surely there is no need for the V1. As you already have the excellent headline, why would you want to route the NDX signal to the V1?
As I understand it, you should turn off the digital output of a streamer when using the Ethernet output, to get best sound quality.

Not sure i follow. Do you mean turning off the analogue out when using the SPDIF out and vica versa?
It looks like the OP wants to use the V1 solely as a HP amp and intends to buy the NDX to take on the streaming role presumably changing to network streaming rather than SPDIF direct from his computer. Seems a bit of a shame not to be making best use of the V1's DAC but from all accounts it does have a very good HP section.
If so he can connect the digital out on the NDX to the digital in on the V1 and the DIN analog out of the NDX to the DIN in on the 282.
Of course the OP should disable whichever output on the NDX (analog or digital) he isn't using when switching between listening via the V1 or the 282 in order to have the best SQ.
Hi to you all,
sjbabbey, formulated better than myself what I was up to : using NDX as a source and be able to use the DAC V1 as a headphone amp only.
hungryhalibut, I have not tried but hoped the DAC V1 would be a better HP amp.
Perhaps I am complicating things too mutch
Well you can't use the V1 in an amp only scenario. The v1 would be perfect if it had an analog in and a digital out.... perhaps someday....
This led me to think that possibility to turn off V1 dig. out would be a good idea.
I return to the point that if one has an NDX and a Headline, what is the added value of the V1. The Headline can be further improved with a Hicap if needs be.

The V1 does not have a digital output. Presumably you mean the OP should disable the analogue outputs.
The OP does have a lot of gear listed in his profile and maybe has more than one system. That might explain why he's thinking of having 2 headphone amps. Otherwise I agree with HH that he only needs to add a HC to upgrade his Headline HP amp. If the OP really wants to go down the route of buying the NDX and doesn't need a second HP amp he could sell or trade his V1.
Sjbabbey, you are right, I've been so foolish and impulsively said that. V1 don't have dig. out.
Lightkeeper, no problem.
It looks like the OP already has a NAPSC powering his Headline HP amp so I assume he is running 2 separate systems and wishes to have a HP amp on both.
I just assume he has more stuff than he needs.
I do not have more stuff than I need, Today I returned the NDX I had borrowed from my dealer for the demo .
But I see your point : why bother to have a Mac minI DAC V1 in parallel with an NDX ? Presumably I will sell the DAC V1 to help financing the NDX .
My system need a bit of rethinking anyway. Thankhs for the input
Think about whether you prefer interacting with the NDX using nStream, or fiddling with a computer playing into the V1. If you like the NDX more, the V1 has no useful purpose. I have never tried one so cannot really comment on how good it is, but nStream is certainly good to use and works well.
Thought about it and I have my answer. After several years of "fiddling" with computers, definitely NDX ! So indeed planning to go streaming only. Will keep you posted.
I don't you will regret it.
Simon
Sorry Simon, did not get that ?
I believe Simon meant to say 'I don't think you will regret it'. Though it might have been 'I don't think you have made the right decision and you will regret it'.
For what it's worth, I don't think you will regret it.
Pardon ???

I know, dear friend, but my reply was submitted to moderation - I don't understand why - and only appeared a day later.
