Why isn't UPNP Universal nor Plug and Play?

Posted by: Gajdzin on 30 March 2014

A stupid question: why can't we control UPNP network players like ND5XS with anything, a laptop, a hundred different softwares instead of only nStream and nothing else?

Also, why won't it play a stream from a UPNP server like internet radio provided by a Synology Multimedia Server?

I thought we were in the age of open systems... Is it just Naim or are all network players like that, they don't understand some standard set of commands?

True, there has been threads on that, although I don't recall that anyone in fact tried asking Naim about it... Maybe I should write to their Support and report here what they answer?

Hi Patrick, for controlling my Naim in addition to NStream I use JRiver Media Center  on my Mac Book Pro. I have used Windows Media Player as a controller for Naim and I have also used various UPnP controller apps on my iPad and Bubble UPnP on my son's Android device.

The Pi can work as a client - although I haven't bothered with this. The bandwidth of the USB is a little limited I beleive.

I do like how NStream loads the playlist into the streamer - I find it does save on the controller (iPad) battery life and that is what I usually use for controlling my Naim.

Simon,

Doesn't JRemote load the playlist up in the same fashion?

I don't know about JRemote, but when I use the J River Media Center application on the Mac Book Pro, then no, it pushes the file one at a time from the UPnP/DLNA server to the network streamer from the local Mefia Center play list.

I just downloaded the 30 day trial JRMC, but when I attempted to open it, it told me that my trial version had expired? I've never used it before!

Anyone any ideas?

Thanks

JRemote will clear this up for you no problem.

Is your computer's system date correct?

Checked that, correct time showing on all apps.

Patrick, I investigated further and indeed found JRiver MC 19 does load the whole album playlist into the NDX. I have yet to see what it does with MC playlists.
