Issue with UPnP on Uniti

Posted by: fapsu on 31 March 2014

Hi everyone!

My name's Fabrizio, I write from Milan, Italy: I'm new to the forum and to the Naim world in general. I looked up my issue on previous threads but couldn't find one describing it exactly so I'm posting it here now: sorry if this had been addressed before.

I've recently purchased a 2nd hand NaimUniti (firmware 3.22) and temporarily set it up as my bedroom system. I really like the unit, I'd say it pleases the eyes almost as much as the ears. I'm really enjoying it so far except for one issue with UPnP. What happens is that switching to UPnP mode the Uniti generally recognizes the sever, I'm able to navigate to the second level menu (when I'm shown the different search options), but as soon as I move on to the next level I'm stuck with the "Please wait" message and the system freezes. At that point, I seem to lose connection altogether as I've tested switching to iRadio mode and can never get past the input initialising phase: even USB playback appears to be affected somehow, although in that case removing and re-inserting the flash drive mostly does the trick. I need to switch the Uniti off and back on to resume normal connectivity.

I specify that the Uniti was connected to the net through wifi at first but I switched to cable through powerline a few days later, hoping to solve the problem but with no avail. Also, I'm running Windows 8.1 on my HTPC and the issue presents itself the same way with a variety of UPnP servers I've tested (Asset, Twonky, Windows Media Player..) so it doesn't seem software-related. iRadio is always working flawlessly except right after a UPnP-related freeze, so I would say the issue is not network-related as I imagine I wouldn't be able to stream at all in that case.. am I right?

As I mentioned earlier, I was able to find a number of threads concerning UPnP troubleshooting on the Uniti, but none where the servers are normally recognized yet no music is ever played. Any suggestion and advice will be very appreciated! Thanks!

This might be too basic and you might have done these already but you could:

1) check the windows settings related to media sharing
2) check the router settings
3) try another router (if easily doable)

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable in networking issues could chip in and give further assistance.

Hej,

which IP-numbers have the uniti, the router and the windows pc? Have you given the uniti a special ip-number or do you use dhcp? But first, when you don't done it yet, switch ewerything off and then start the router, when its on, switch on the pc and at last the uniti. Also give a try to set the uniti to factory defaults and restart it. Do you use a iPad and nStream?

Thanks both!

I'm very happy to report that I've apparently overcome the problem, and it seems the right direction was the first one suggested by osprey. I haven't figured out yet what's wrong with my Windows media sharing settings, but today I set up a Raspberry Pi with XBMC as media/UPnP server and so far streaming has been working smoothlessly! Server recognition takes but a sec, all search options work and most of all music does play like it's supposed to. I'll probably keep the Pi up permanently as a very cheap 24/7 music server.

Thanks again!

It's good to hear that you've found a working solution. Enjoy your music!

For sake for completeness, and in case this might be useful for someone else in the future, I'll also add a few notes about my configuration clarifying the points Reinibert mentioned.

The Uniti received its IP via DHCP: that appears to always be the same even though I haven't set up any address reservation. I did try a static IP once while troubleshooting, but that didn't change anything for the better and even created some further connection issues, so I quickly switched back to DHCP.

I don't own any Apple products and I wasn't using any remote app while experiencing the issues I posted.

While troubleshooting I did my share of switching everything off and back on, as well as factory resets in various orders: not sure among the combinations I accidentally tried also the one suggested by Reinibert though.

UPnP is not the main reason I got the Uniti for, but it surely bugged me to have that function not working properly!
