So many great albums, a personal favourite of mine is Oh Mercy, sounds marvellous on vinyl as well. I'm sure you will get many recommendations but it's a back catalogue worth exploring.
Enjoy.....

I think that his two very best were recorded just as he was moving from acoustic to electric, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde.
Both are included on a recently issued Sony mono set of Dylan's first eight albums called The Original Mono Recordings, available in CD or (at huge cost) LP formats.
Most of what Dylan has done since is an anticlimax (although I agree that the Budokan set is good).
Just my opinion, of course.

I've never been an avid fan of "His Bobness" either but do seem to have ended up with a number of his LPs. Much of his catalogue is to be avoided in my view. A veritable minefield! Can you recommend any other albums i should track down

If you like Budokan you may enjoy Street Legal from about that time.
I really would recommend Blood on the Tracks above all others though. Very convincing record where he was really trying, I think, and its got a certain something.
And a gem from out of the blue much later - Time Out of Mind from 1997.
On LP, of course.
Very best
David.

Blood on the Tracks is one of my all time favourite albums and I love Street Legal as well. Blonde on Blonde of course is a classic. Before the Flood, live with the Band, is worth a listen. The live Bootleg Series albums are excellent, particularly the Rolling Thunder Review and "Royal Albert Hall".
His last three studio albums are also fine, but get to know his earlier stuff first.

As suggested Street Legal is around the same time as Budokan and has similarities with backing singers, horns etc. To stay in the seventies, maybe Blood on the Tracks and/or Desire. If you still like what you hear, then forward or backwards in years is a goldmine of exploration.
There's obvious contenders, but some albums like Self Portrait and Saved can end up favourites as well. Never straight forward with Dylan.
Enjoy the discovery.

Since you are into vinyl, get a copy of this.
Lovely sound and even better music. The box contains Dylans first eight albums.

I'm no big fan either (when he starts that nasal whining thing I want to slap him) but I'm fond of 'Hurricane' and 'Blood on the tracks'. Maybe I ought to try a few more myself. Great song writer imho but not so fond of the singing.

Blood on the Tracks is a masterpiece I reckon.

Over so many decades and albums not all can be great. He said recently in an interview that he's been blessed with a second wind. I love the last 6-8 albums. I put 'Together Thru Life' on all the time. I know his has a terrible voice but I am just amazed he can whip out so many songs, an old man who has lived a long strange life to tell about it. 2 that I love are 'Shake Shake Mamma' is wonderfully tawdry tale and Hell is My Wife's Home Town. the big ballad at the end is 'I feel a Change comin' on' and ends with a rousing 'It's all Good'. This is great roadhouse music that could only be done by him in such quantity. A real master of the western music art form. Most of them are dance tunes. Grab your honey and cut the rug.
I know I'm strange, all of you can howl, but I revel in his stuff these days.

If you like Budokan, you should absolutely check out "Before the Flood" - a live recording from 1974. Has solo tracks, then ones with The Band.
Was the first Dylan album I bought, probably at 15, so have a soft spot for it. But, the version of "It's Alright Ma (I'm only bleeding)" is the best I've heard from him.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Before_the_Flood notes that there is a remastered version from 2009. I don't have it.

I like all his classic albums as discussed here. But please see also "No Direction Home"; Scorcese's masterpiece documentary.

Oh, and also see "The Big Lebowski" soundtrack....."The Man in Me".

I have Budokan and only played it a few times. It was that period searching for a new sound and back up group. I can't say it's my favorite. Also to be considered is Concert for Bangladesh He has an incredible group of guys backing him.

Even though I'm not the greatest fan of Blonde On Blonde its a must have but my two fav's so far are these...
Street Legal & Nashville Skyline (this one has a slightly bad duet with Johnny Cash but that makes it all the more interesting)
BobDylanFan.
