Nas for Naim - Quiet, straightforward and reliable!
Posted by: Tog on 16 February 2011
NAS drives are now a vital part of our Naim lives.... so what works best, not on test but in the real world?
Please share your recommended NAS devices - not simply whether they pass the Naim test but NAS drives you have experience of using and would recommend - as quiet, straightforward to use and reliable with Naim kit.
There are several threads running just wanted to pull everything together -
What do you use that just works? What NAS drives do you allow into your house?

Hi tog,
I use a Netgear Readynas Duo with my Unitiserve. which I have owned for 18 months, and it works seamlessly. It was also simple to set up.
So good I have bought another one to accomodate my non music media files.
Highly recommended.

Another happy synology user here, I use a 211J with 2 x seagate 2tb drives in raid 1. Simple set up on the Mac, excellent instructions and a lively support forum. Can't comment on its compatability with Naim servers but works flawlessly with sonos in my system.

Tog,
Would also be useful to know what UPnP servers members are using (where relevant) with their Naim kit (when running on NAS).
Anyway I'm using QNAP TS419P with 4*1.5 Seagate Barracuda drives. Not using UPnP at moment but did use Twonky on my NAS when playing with a Qute some time back - all worked well.
I have been extremely please with QNAP and would recommend the unit - maybe has more features than needed by many members

I have disabled the UPnP on ny NAS as per my dealer's recommendation.Posted on: 16 February 2011 by Aleg
That would depend on your attached Naim device I think.
An HDX or a Serve don't need/want another UPnP server accessing the same data on the NAS.
When using a UPnP client like Qute, Unity or NDX you will need a UPnP server in the network and most probably that will be one on the NAS. So in these cases it is relevant to know what UPnP Server works well.

Another enthusiastic + for QNAP. For the last 7 months, I'm using the 459 Pro with Twonky Media feeding a Uniti and I'm very happy with the results (either wireless or wired). I confirm however that QNAP 459 might offer more features than an average music streaming user would need. For your additional info I replaced the standard IP company router with the rather "premium" Cisco (not Linksys!) WRVS4400N.

I have synology 209. Just drag files onto music drive/folder and enable media server on webpage.
I use hitachi drive sometimes it's fan turna on and vibrate. Better to put it further away from listening area.
Use wise it's easy and works fine.

I run an Infrant (now Netgear) NV+. .Excellent unit. Not quiet, but then its a NAS and can be sited out of the way. Its been reliable, a 5 minute job to replace a failed disk drive (hot swap). No UPnP server running as that sits on a separate mac mini. Power management is good too as it powers up when i'm around to listen to music and goes off when i'm not. Agree about the QNAP's above - very nice units.

If you want something really quiet (fanless), reliable and good looking, meaning even on a Fraim, go for an AssetNAS. I'm using one for several month now and would't change it against nothing

Synology DS 422 slim with 4 x 2.5 inch drives looks good - great review over at CA.

WD MyBook Live - very low power consumption and very silent. Works perfectly well
