Secondhand Record Store Directory

Posted by: Steve J on 11 April 2014

I've been meaning to start this thread to create a useful guide to forum members up and down the country, and abroad, of recommended s/h record stores to visit on our travels.

I'll kick it off with two in the Watford area near where I live.

The first is Sounds Retro run by my friend Pete in Watford Market. There is a huge stock of good quality s/h vinyl covering all genres. Quality is generally very good and pricing is realistic. I've had many bargains here over the years. He discounts prices for multiple buys and friends.   It's a favourite place for friends who come over to visit. There is no mail order or website.

The second is appropriately called Second Scene situated in Pinner Road 5 minutes walk from Bushey Railway Station. This is a small shop environment run by Julian with a large selection of vinyl for sale. His prices are reasonable but not quite as good as Pete at the market.

The website is http://www.secondscene.co.uk

I hope people will contribute to this thread and others find it useful in their search for good quality vinyl.

Record Collector is Sheffield's largest independent record shop specialising in new and second hand CDs & Vinyl.

Record Collector was first opened in 1978. It was featured in the Last Shop Standing book and more recently the film based on the book. In the film local musician Richard Hawley described a visit to the shop as 'turns my brain to mush and I end up walking out with things I didn't even know existed'.

Address

233-235 Fulwood Road

South Yorkshire

Steve, anytime you are visiting Sheffield let me know we can shop together .

Sounds good Graham. I'll keep my eye out for a conference. Any excuse to buy some records.

I must take you to the market near me but it's probably small fry compared with Record Collector in Sheffield.

If you are in the States I'll put a plug in for the Princeton Record Exchange in Princeton, NJ.  Recently picked up the box set of Miles Davis at the Plugged Nickel in mint condition

Sounds of the Universe at 7 Broadwick Street W1, just off London's vinyl mecca, Berwick Street in Soho. Associated with the superb Soul Jazz reissue label. Excellent for reggae, soul, soundtracks, library music, jazz and the like.

Diverse Vinyl, Newport, Wales, and Henry's Records, Burton on Trent, for me, the latter being exceptionally good for Rock at the heavier end of the spectrum. Also Stamford Audio, Little Bytham, Lincolnshire, who clean every record on a KM or Okki Nokki before shipping.

Ben's Collectors Records in Tunsgate, Guildford, has masses of CDs and Vinyl, a little chaotic and crowded. He will take wants and get back to you when he locates something, very good with exchanges if there's a problem.

There's an independent record store nearby too People Records, small but perfectly formed as they say, not sure if he has vinyl though.

Brighton has it's fair share of S/H vinyl stores too.

Wax Factor in Trafalgar Street, down from the station on the edge of the Laines, it has a huge stock and quite often multiple copies of albums.

I have been recommended Monkey Music, off London Road , but haven't got there yet.

A list of others here:  http://www.yelp.co.uk/search?c...mp;find_loc=Brighton

Always rather liked Rooster Records in Exeter, though these days they seem to go more for new vinyl.

This shop in Cardiff is in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest record shop in the world.

Here's a couple of pics of the Electric Fetus in Minneapolis that were taken last year on Record Store Day. It's no Spillers, but the store did open in 1968. Over the last few years, it's been interesting to watch the number of CD isles shrink and vinyl isles grow. I stop by most Saturday mornings, and the place is typically about half as busy.

PS - The store got some nice free publicity at the 2010 Grammy Awards, when Ringo showed up in a 'Fetus t-shirt.
