NDX arriving today
Posted by: antony d on 16 April 2014
looking forward to getting my NDX up and running today, matching it with 202, 200 and hoping to add High cap later - then if budget allows (wife) XPS - all fairly new to me - dealer recommended QNAP HS 210 at NAS - have put 4TB of memory so should be enough using dBpoweramp to rip CD's - which is great software and pretty easy to use -
Enjoy it Antony. Mine has been running a week and imho it is a beautifully balanced sounding player.

Wonderful machine the NDX. Enjoy!
Antony enjoy.
a suggestion as you seem new to CD streaming, before you rip all your CDs, rip about 10 and make sure you are happy with them in terms of metadata so they are indexed in a way that works for you when using Nstream with your UPnP server app (Asset, Minimserver etc) which you will probably load onto your QNAP Storage server (NAS) ... Then once happy go for it...

Have a look at installing Asset on your QNAP. It should be more stable than the inbuilt UPNP software.
Would also recommend that you ensure your NAS drive is set up as RAID 1 where one disk mirrors the other. Thus if you have a hard disk failure you won't lose your music collection.
However as a second step it is also worth considering having a completely separate back up. While RAID 1 will cover you against hardware failures it doesn't cover other problems, for instance the accidental deletion of files via your PC.
Hi Antony, worth having a look at the synology DSJ212 and choosing your own drives - it honestly is a doodle to build. DB Power works well for me. Enjoy!
well it arrived yesterday, Phil from Cybiosis went through the whole set up through to NAS (which I have QNAP 4TB) - need to get used to dBpoweramp etc
but what I wanted to achieve from this whole project was to get back to the musicality of my old CDX2 with the functionality of the Unti I have have PX -
and I have to say how delighted I am so far - NDX is a superb peace of kit, using it with Ipad is peace of cake - and the music quality is stunning and it is only been on for 24 hours -
Thanks for the advice on Forum as ever -

A separate back up is essential - RAID of any flavour doesn't guarantee your music is safe from loss.

Although one could argue that the original CDs could represent that separate backup, but not if stored in the same location as the NAS drive.
Hi Antony, seems like we are both in the same place, my NDX arrived yesterday & I too am moving from a CDX2.
I am an avid DIY'er so insisted on installing myself with the dealer promise of only a phone call or a personally visit away. I installed yesterday afternoon & have more or less figured out how it all works & set up the various options. Remembering it all is another matter & that will take a little more time. I like n-Stream but I need to get more used to the iPAD concept.
Unfortunately the new store cabinet for the NAS & Router has not been delivered on schedule so I have cables & NAS laying around the floor, not very tidy !!!

could not be any happier with the NDX, agree with your views - but after having a Uniti for a couple of years following the CDX2 XPS etc - its a real game changer - for me Phil at Cymbiosis got it right on the mark - wanted to regain Musicallity from CDX2 with the flex of Uniti - so far the NDX is doing it in spades and it has not warmed up yet - NORE has it been off - real it with the faimily too, result

Reading your posts - I have decided to wire my NDX directly into my 282 via the Hiline. Listening to some great clarinet jazz - I like the smoothness. Ok not has detailed as my NDAC/555PS but am enjoying the change right now.

Interesting Simon. My favoured combination of the three is NDX/555PS but I've read you found that not to your taste - too 'edgy' I think you felt. I found the addition of the NDAC/555PS too edgy and flat and the NDX alone a bit 'soft' and comparitively congested.
The addittion of the 555PS to the NDX makes it nicely balanced to my ears - the best compromise en route to an NDS.

Hi Graeme.. Good game!!! The NDX is smooth and curtailed but for some music that is ok. However the dynamics pale compared to the NDAC/555PS, and perhaps more smeared.. but hey it still sounds good.

I don't find the dynamics pale at all (this with the 555PS on the NDX). The NDAC/555PS is a tad too clinical to my ears. More detailed, but less fluid to me.
It's a funny old game indeed!

Hi Graeme, indeed. The NDAC/555PS is not perfect.. in absolute terms, but clinical is absolutely one adjective that I just can't relate to with it. It's a very analogue perhaps slightly forward sound, but with vibrancy and textures. The NDS on the other hand is very precise and clean, but to me perhaps errs on the side of being clinical.
I was comparing an NDS with an LP12 not so long ago and this was quite marked.
As I have said several times before, I am looking forward to the mythical NDAC2 that would combine the NDS precision with the NDAC vibrancy and flow.
BTW a Powerline on the NDX when performing DAC duties seems to really help
