Record Store Day booty
Posted by: joerand on 20 April 2014
I nabbed CCR '69 Singles on 10 inch white vinyl and the Springsteen American Beauty EP.
Doors Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine double LP seemed to be the hottest item - I missed out. I also missed out on any of the Zombies LPs.
RSD is a crazy day, really, it's a stressful time, full of amateurs, at what is otherwise a relaxing experience. Might be my last RSD.
Anyhow, I'd be happy to hear what others wanted, and what you came away with.
I picked up...
Donny Hatheway Live at the Bitter End 1971
Grateful Dead - Live in Hampton 1979
Allman Brothers Live from the Beacon Theater 1992
My local shop also offers 20% off all of their non RSD inventory... so I picked up:
Paul Simon - Still Crazy after all these Years LP (Rhino remaster from RSD 2013)
Robben Ford - A Day in Nashville (LP)
Garcia + Grisman - Been all Around This World (CD)
The only thing I wanted that I missed out on was the remastered "Garcia" (1st Jerry Garcia studio album)... however, I have a line on one so am not overly concerned about it.
Have almost played through all of it :-)
I was going to look for Veruca Salt's new 10 inch but family stuff filled up my day so I couldn't get away. I'm doing that thing where you discover you like something 20 years after it came out. I liked their stuff back in the 90s but for some reason I didn't get into it enough to buy anything. Anyway, female alt rock guitar singer song writers seem to be my weakness.
Ed Kuepper of the Saints ( who is not remotely girly) did an "in store" at Brisbane's Rockinghorse records. Missed that as well. Your (our) Royals caused one store to close early as Saturday afternoon was the Royal visit day in our part of the world. The only good thing to come out of the visit was the publicity for the record store. I didn't even know we had one in that part of town It is relatively new and was completely under my radar.
Grumble bum is me.
With luck there will be some crumbs to pick up in stores this week.
Veruca Salt was on my radar, but I didn't see it. Interestingly, there were ample numbers of the Aerosmith reissues available at each of the shops I went to.
I've been looking at all the RSD scalpers on ebay. The Doors and Zombies RSD LPs I was after are now on auction for 3 times the original price. That's the shame of it. Some folks go to RSD only to grab LPs they have no interest in ever hearing. Only to make a profit by reselling. C'est la vie!
Karma will have the last laugh. No way would I be paying 3 times the price to line the pockets of some evil opportunistic capitalist. Mind you, that's the record companies to a T I guess.
With a new album in the works there may well be rereleases of early VS LPs.
Picked up "Hampton Coliseum '79", The Field "Here We Go Sublime" and The Civil Wars "Live at Eddie's". Also picked a beautiful used copy of Ted Curson's "Tears for Dolphy" (mid-80's Japanese King Records reissue). All in all, a very nice haul.
But the crowds were ridiculous! In an earlier post, I took this as a sign of vinyl optimism. Now that I think about it, I guess some number of those young shoppers just had to be Ebay opportunists. The R.E.M. $85 4-lp box set is re-selling for 3X online!
ATB.

What you call 'Ebay opportunists' I call 'rat bastards'. The same ilk that buy up concert tickets with no intention of ever attending. Scalpers. I can give them some credit for having gone through the effort of travelling to the store and waiting in line to buy an item, but 3X seems excessive. The problem is that there are saps willing to pay the exorbitant prices on Ebay.
The Doors 1st press 'Weird Scenes' is hardly a rare or expensive LP to buy secondhand in good nick, and the SQ is probably much better than this reissue.
I couldn't see anything I could be bothered to go and buy so I gave it a miss. I probably purchase in excess of 100 LPs, new and secondhand, over the year and do my bit to support the vinyl market.
Steve
This was the first year I had RSD off work but my wife has but an embargo on any vinyl purchases for a little while.

I'm curious as to the basis for your supposition that the original vinyl SQ is 'probably much better'. The Doors Rhino vinyl pressings circa 2009/2010 are really quite good in comparison to the couple of original US pressings I have. In fact, I'd say the newer, heavier vinyl in limited pressing tracks much quieter and has a healthier, better balanced bottom end. Soundstage is excellent as well.
John Foxx- Metamatic
Alice Cooper- Live in Switzerland
Between the buried and me- Live Colours
Jake Bugg- 12 in single
Oasis- Supersonic 12in single
Sex Pistols- Box set.
NIrvana- Pennyroyal tea
The Farm- Altogether now.
I picked up:
Built To Spill - Ultimate Alternative Wavers - first time ever on vinyl, remastered from original tapes, limited to 4500 LPs. pressend on "GOLD"
Holger Czukay - On the Way To The Peak Of Normal
Pixies - Indy City - RSD14 Edition
Yep I ordered online via Normans & Rough Trade plus a couple on ebay at normal price the following.
Luke Haines - Lou Reed 7"
T Rex BBC sessions box set 7"
Sex Pistols - Box Set 7"
Captain Beefheart Dustsucker LP
Jenks Miller/James Toth split LP
Marianne Faithful - Sister Morphine 7"
Bardo Pond - LP
Pixies - Indy Cindy with free 7"

The Band & Rock of Ages
Dylan Blood on the Tracks
Tea for the Tillerman
Townes Van Zandt, Live at the Old Town Quarter
Sunday ordered another dozen Jazz and American rock groups plus 2 packages of sleeves.
My splurge for the year.
RSD is a crazy day, really, it's a stressful time, full of amateurs, at what is otherwise a relaxing experience. Might be my last RSD.
What makes them amatuer compared to regular shoppers for LPs??
Amateurs buy and pros sell!
If you are a regular customer at a particular shop your won't be queueing up on RSD, amateur or not!
Amateurs I thought because many were lining up on RSD with CDs and DVDs, an indication that this might be their lone annual trip to the shop. And on a day when the wait in line to pay was 20+ minutes.
I went for four limited edition releases that I truly wanted and came away with two. The carpetbaggers that purchase limited editions with the sole intent of reselling for a profit ruin the spirit of things. Whaaa !
I am a regular customer at a particular shop (maybe several) and have never attended RSD in the past. My primary motivation for going this year was to get The Doors release .

Joe,
I have the Rhino reissues and the SQ of my 1st press copy of Weird Scenes is much better. I would certainly buy the Rhino reissues over paying big bucks for the 1st presses of the first four LPs but not for this compilation which is easily obtainable and cheap to buy.
Steve
Steve,
I'm not familiar with The Doors' foreign labels and pressings. The original US pressing of Weird Scenes had the Elektra butterfly label. I know there are German pressings. Are there UK pressings as well? How would you identify or describe the specific pressing you have? Thanks
Joe,
Same cover, Butterfly label but pressed in UK. SQ is superb, I played both albums through yesterday.

Thanks, Steve. Your help is much appreciated.
I should be able to find the pressing you described on Ebay. I've always found the Beatles' UK pressings to be superior to the US Capitol records. I'm sure that had much to do with the fact that Capitol was sent copies of the original master tapes, whereas UK pressings used the original masters. I wonder if the UK was sent the Doors' original masters? I have no background on that issue.
It's UK release is K62009 with A1/B3, C1/D1 at the end of the matrices. There is also the name 'Allen' etched into the deadwax, who I guess was responsible for the mastering.
Thanks again Steve. Great info.
Also, for anyone interested in obtaining the Doors RSD release of "Weird Scenes Inside the Gold Mine", there is currently a presale underway for what appears to be the same Rhino release. It's going for 27 pounds, to be released on May 19, and can be found here
Cheers!
