Streaming Internet Audio

I have noticed that there are a number of threads on this forum all talking about internet radio and issues with its reception.  I also note that some services seem to perform better than others - there are video streaming services that require a bandwidth higher than those needed to stream audio even at hi res as well as audio services such as Qobuz that do not seem to have the same problems. Do other hardware providers (SONOS, Linn etc) exhibit the same problems. Do they have an inherently different approach to the solution such as bigger buffers to cope with lost packets, use of different codecs/bit depths etc.  I'm looking to improve my understanding of the problem/issues involved in this area so my question to those more knowledgeable than me is; what are the big problems to overcome in providing a good reliable audio stream via the internet? What if anything can we, as listeners, do to improve the situation and possibly more important what can the hardware providers do.
