Change of NAS

Posted by: musica on 28 April 2014

Hi

At the moment I am streaming cd's ripped using dbpoweramp ripper on my pc. These are ripped in wav format. These are streamed to my NDX using Readynas Duo 2. However the upnp server on the readynas has a very limited artwork/metadata presentation on the nstream ap.  The important requirement is that I wish to use a NAS to serve the NDX without having my pc on. I would like to use Asset as my upnp server but this cannot be installed on the readynas.  I assume Asset would give a better artwork/metadata presentation on the nstream ap. ie similar to that achieved when using a Unitiserve. Is there a NAS on which Asset can be installed to achieve this result. Or alternatively any other NAS/installed upnp server combinations that would achieve the same result. Any help would be appreciated.

You can install Asset or other servers on most Nas's. Check the server's website for info on which NAS they support. I use Minimserver.

MinimServer is now available from the Synology Package Center for all Synology models with an Intel CPU.

Just last week I installed the latest build of Minimserver on my Readynas Duo v2 and it seems as good as Asset which I previously ran on a computer. I actually prefer the sound too! And they've recently introduced WAV tag support which is a plus.

Hope this helps!

If you go to the dBpoweramp website I think you will find that Asset can't be installed on any NAS devices.  It looks like that is about to change very soon as they are currently beta testing Asset for QNAP which will be officially released very soon, if it hasn't already.

Asset can be installed and run on QNAP NAS's. If I wasn't running LMS on my QNAP I would install Asset.

You can run Asset on a Raspberry PI which is another option, some forum members have had good results with this and you wouldn't need to replace your NAS.

I have the Asset upnp installed on my qnap nas. I think it is better than Twonky. Costs 22 euro and easy to install.

You only need your computer when you want to change something in the Asset configuration.

One negative point,

I am not sure if there is a way around this, but when adding music or changing metadata you have to rescan your files. In twonky you just rescan/ restart in the nstream app, with Asset this has to be done via the qnap nas. But maybe there is an easier possibillity and I am taking the long road.

Nnnot quite. You're just telling Twonky to rescan on your NAS via nStream. NStream itsself doesn't do any scanning of your library.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I have no technical knowledge of how asset or twonky works.

I was trying to explain that with this rescanning, IME, twonky is just a bit easier to use.

JTB - I'm pretty sure Asset can be set to automatically recognise new stuff added to your music folders - I certainly don't need to tell mine to re-scan each time.

I have Asset running on an Assetnas and it works brilliantly. It automatically, and very quickly, picks up any new music saved in my music folders. I've run it on a standard PC too and it worked in an identical manor

Hi

Thanks to all members who replied to my post. This has certainly given me plenty to think about. Having read the replies and looked elsewhere on the forum it does seem that finding the best server  and NAS is a bit of a minefield. It makes you wonder why Naim do not sell a lot more Unitiserves. I suppose this is mainly down to price. It does however provide an easy solution to the question I have posed. It may of course be that those who have server/NAS problems post on the the forum whereas the majority of those who do not say nothing. It also seems to me that NAS manufacturers do restrict the servers that can be installed on their products. I shall take note of the information members have kindly provided, and am sure that I shall end up with a solution satisfies me. Thanks.
